Characteristics To Consider When Buying Stuffed Unicorns

By Freda Watts

When you want to choose a gift for a baby, or for child up to earliteen years, stuffed unicorns are a popular options. They can be a security toy for a toddler, or a decorative accent pillow for a girl's bed. Today, unicorns are growing in popularity due to the fact that they are more attractive than the current generation of monsters and prehistoric animals that marked children's stuffed toys in the past. Some children's fantasy books, movies and television shows include this type of animal.

Unicorns are available from small toys suitable for a toddler to those which stand taller than the owners. The smaller owner will probably prefer a toy that is more in line with the size of the child. Because plush animals are lightweight and soft, they are easy for even a toddler to carry around.

When you choose a toy in a plush fabric, you want it to be clean for a child. Often younger children rub the fur against the face or may even chew on an ear or on the horn of the unicorn. It is important to be able to clean the toy to prevent or eradicate germs, stains and unknown substances on the surface. Before buying the toy, be sure to check the cleaning instructions.

You should consider the age of the the child before selecting a specific stuffed toy. The size of the animal for a toddler should be one which can be grasped easily by tiny hands. Weight is important, but the construction usually is of lightweight materials. An older child may want a more decorative toy for display, rather than as a comfort toy.

A review of the literature which refers to unicorns usually describes the animal as pure white. It is noted for grace and beauty. The horn is a prominent feature. Commercial designs for toys are sometimes pastel, but usually white. Designers may offer contrasting manes and tails. The horn may have sparkles included. Accessories may be included, but are less common.

When choosing a toy, including a unicorn, safety should always be a prime consideration. Children under age three should not play with toys that have parts which might become loose. Children will attempt to swallow button or plastic eyes, for example. The youngster may also attempt to insert loose objects into the nose or ears with sometimes disastrous results.

Children's literature, television and movies has incorporated the idea of strong, yet pure unicorns as champions of princesses and fairy creatures. This idea appeals to the imagination of a youngster. Carrying around a toy that looks like the fantasy creatures the youngster see can feel very secure. Communication skills that benefit for the entire lifetime are enhanced when the child can see links between various objects and concepts.

For parents and interested parties, choosing stuffed unicorns as a first toy is a sensible choice. As a gift to enhance decor in a older child's room, the toy also has benefits. The toys are available in several sizes, but white is often the color of choice. The major considerations in buying such a toy should include safety, durability, care instructions and size.
