Tips For Fly Fishing Key West

By Rosetta Drake

People are increasingly looking for ways to spend more time outside and a hobby such as fishing can be a great way to do it. Anglers that desire to take their skills to the next level should try and challenge themselves by ditching the traditional rod and reel approach. Fly fishing Key West is a challenge that can be conquered with some simple advice.

The first mistake many people make it to try and overdo it before they really know what they are doing. Anglers should practice accuracy with their fly rod and concern themselves more with hitting a spot than casting a long distance. They should go after fish that are with fifteen or twenty feet before becoming more comfortable with the gear.

The backcast is usually the most difficult thing a fly angler has to master. This is especially true in the beginning, when the angler might have a jerky motion that will be ineffective and can spook the fish. It is vital to have a nice smooth motion during the backcast to increase accuracy and avoid scaring away all of the fish with violent motions.

Any fisherman will say that one of the biggest challenges is casting on a windy day. This is why it is best to avoid these types of adverse weather conditions and only fish on a nice calm day. Those that find themselves in a strong wind should try to position themselves so that the wind is at their back, thus making it easier to cast.

It is always a good idea to get some advice and tips from locals whenever exploring a new area. A great place to start is to go to the local tackle or bait shop and talk to some of the people that work and shop there. People that live in the area are usually happy to answer questions about lure selection, conditions and what places to avoid.

Many people miss the entire point of angling by doing it with a big group of friends or family. Although this can be very enjoyable, the serious angler will remember that this is a solitary calling and ultimately not something that should be done in a huge group. Not only does noise scare away the fish, but can also distract people and make it harder to enjoy the peace.

Finally, anglers should definitely read up on tips and strategies from guide books and outdoors magazines. They may find a new lure that would work perfect in the area, or get some valuable advice about new gear. They should also read a local weather report so that they are aware of any adverse weather conditions that might affect the outing.

Those that want a real challenge will try some fly fishing Key West. Not only is it a great way to get some exercise, but people can enjoy the peace and fresh air of nature. Those armed with some solid gear and strategy will be much more likely to have some success and come home with a basket bull of fish.
