By Carlene Eriksson

South America is regarded by many as one of the most popular getaway destinations the world has to offer. For many years, visitors have traveled to this continent for leisurely getaways, as it provides almost anything they could desire. Tourists are always pleased with what they discover in this intriguing area of the world, whether they are looking for a boisterous nightlife, a romantic getaway, or a wonderful place to shop. Below are some ideal choices for those planning South America vacations:

Arguably the continent's most mesmerizing city, Rio de Janeiro is famous for its Ipanema, outstanding scenery, and beautiful beaches. One can choose to visit Corcovado Mountain, or enjoy a sun-filled day on one of the world's most spectacular shorelines. Visitors can also take incomparable pictures of Guanabara Bay, the latter of which is considered a natural wonder.

Coroico, Bolivia is another destination that travelers should consider. The city has much to offer those who enjoy physical activities, especially sports such as hiking and bike riding on challenging trails. Located close to the thriving city of La Paz, Coroico offers the best of both worlds for those who enjoy both physical activity, and rest and relaxation. Surrounded by a beautiful historic church and several shops and cafes, the small town square provides the ideal environment in which to relax and unwind after stimulating ride or hike.

Virtually all vacationers agree that Columbia is an unexpected treasure of the South American continent. However, it remains essentially unspoiled, which many travelers find advantageous. Vibrant bright flowers, lush rolling hills, and banana tree fields give this area its unique appeal and charm. Visitors can take guided tours through coffee plantations, indulge in jeep excursions through the country's unspoiled wilderness, or visit one of many historical landmarks.

Chile's renowned city of Santiago is a classic example of an area that has a cosmopolitan atmosphere as well as a tropical flair. The city is perfect for vacationers who wish to experience a stimulating nightlife, enjoy excellent live entertainment or shop from dawn to dusk. There are also cultural attractions, including museums, art galleries, theaters, and opera and ballet performances. Those planning to travel to South America, but who cannot decide on a location should consider Santiago.

Venezuela's largest city is Caracas, and it should not be overlooked by anyone who is planning to visit South America. Caracas boasts a modern urban skyline that is surrounded a tropical, unspoiled landscape. Lush vegetation, beautiful flowers and millions of friendly inhabitants make the city a fantastic choice for those who love to become part of the surrounding culture while on vacation.

Most cities in South America are also a delight for shoppers. Here, tourists can find shoes, jewelry, palm fiber hammocks, pottery, handmade wool tapestries, and other imported products. In some cities, tax-free goods are available to those who can show a hotel receipt or passport. This is another advantage of visiting this unique and exciting continent.

The aforementioned cities are sure to delight and please travelers from all areas of the world, regardless of the time of year they plan to take their trip. South America vacations offer the experience of a lifetime to visitors of all ages and from all walks of life.
