How to Hook Up a Portable Home Generator

By Vincent Kiernan

Portable generators are devices that use either gas or diesel to provide short term solution to power shortage problems. Such solutions are mandatory because power is a basic unit in a majority of households and work places. Without power most of the things would not function.

This is when portable generators come in handy. Portable generators are therefore appliances that supply power in case of a power outbreak. Portable generators supply power for the purposes of lighting up the house, heating up food by the use of electric cookers or microwaves, cooling food as of a refrigerator and various other electrical appliances in the house. Portable generators, just as their name implies can be moved from one position to another. They have been known to be very efficient as one can easily carry them place to place. They also have very many uses, this include in the mining industries, in businesses, and even in our homes.

Some portable generators use fuel for their operations. These include portable diesel generators. When the lights go off, the generator is fueled and then turned on and it is ready to go. If such an appliance is used in the home, one must ensure that the containers carrying the fuel should be clearly labeled and stored away from children. These are precautions that are put in place to avoid accidents in the home.

Portable generators actually are not complex. Their installation process is usually quite easy. All they require is to have enough power to start working and once they are at work they can easily function on their own until they are turned off. Compared to their other counterparts, the standby generators, they are relatively cheaper and easier to maintain.

An important fact to know when dealing with a portable generator is; you should always ensure that the capacity of electricity of the generator ought to surpass the power supplies of the appliances to which it supplies. This is to ensure that the power it distributes is used evenly by all appliances.

When the portable generators are running, they release a dangerous gas known as carbon-monoxide. This gas is deadly if inhaled by any human. Therefore it is wise to install devices that can detect the presence of the gas incase the gas finds its way into the house. One should also avoid plugging the generator together with the electrical devices found in the home as these may lead to short circuiting thus destroying the appliances.

One must also ensure that the portable generator does not make contact with any liquid especially water. This could be very dangerous, as it may lead to unfortunate situations such as destruction of the portable generator or someone getting hurt.

The portable generator is therefore essential, especially for companies that depend on power for their day to day functions. One cannot be sure when electricity will be there or not, it is therefore safe to have a portable generator in case of an emergency.
