The Proper Way to Safely Store Your Cigar Lighter

By Harrison Hyde

For many individuals, smoking cigars and tobacco pipes are something that is only done on certain occasions. These individuals might only smoke once a week or once a month. What mean cigar and pipe smokers neglect when taking extended breaks in between smoke sessions is proper care and storage of their lighters. Learning how to store a cigar lighter is an important part of making sure that every smoke session is enjoyed to the fullest extent possible. Without proper care and storage of your lighter, you might end up having to use a different type of lighter than what you normally use, which could compromise the flavor of your cigar.

One of the first things you need to do in order to properly store your cigar is to bleed it. Before you can bleed the lighter, though, you will need to turn the flame on the lighter as low as it will go. You want to avoid being burned by your lighter as much as possible, as these burns can be very painful. Once the flame is turned down, you are ready to begin the bleeding process. In order to bleed the lighter, you will need a pin or screwdriver. You can also use a matchstick if nothing else is available. Stick the pin down into the butane valve, which is located on the top of most lighter models. Press the valve down gently and wait for the hissing sound. This sound is air escaping from the inside of the lighter. Air and butane left in the lighter can cause significant damage to occur or prevent the lighter from working properly during its next use.

After that you should take some time to refill the lighter. Take the butane fuel and stick the tip of its can into the butane lighter. Fill the lighter for five to ten seconds. Once this is complete, you will need to remove the tip of the fuel can from the butane valve.

The next part of this decision involves where you're going to store the lighter. Lighters have a safe range of storage temperatures. Most of the time, all you need to do is exercise a little bit of common sense to understand how to store the lighter properly in this regard. For example, you wouldn't want to store a butane lighter in the glove compartment of your car during the summer, when the interior temperatures may go far outside of this safe range.

A lighter should always be stored out of the reach of children. You should also make certain that you store the lighter and the butane you use to fuel it together, simply for the sake of convenience. Lighters should be stored away from anything flammable, for obvious reasons, and should be kept away from moisture, dust and debris and other environmental hazards that may end up ruining the workings, case or actually presenting an even more significant threat to the lighter, or the threat of starting a fire.
