Avoiding Outside Influence in Cigar Smoking

By Kayla Kelly

For someone who is a regular smoker of cigars, having the right type of lighter is an essential element of having a good smoke session. Along with having a great lighter, you will need to be able to refill your lighter when it has run out of fuel. In order to make sure that your lighter works properly and that you get the best and most even lighting, you will need to have the right type of fuel for your specific type of lighter. Choosing the wrong type of fuel can end up damaging your lighter or causing it to malfunction.

It is of the utmost importance that a lighter contain fuel which has the lowest smell and weakest taste possible. Due to the fact that cigars need to be exposed to a lighting source for a significant period of time, the choice in lighter fuel is essential in maintaining the original taste of the cigar. With this issue in mind, many cigar companies have developed highly powerful butane lighters. These lighters are designed to produce a high-intensity flame. This flame will limit the exposure the cigar has to the lighter fuel. As a result, the cigar will be far less affected by the taste and smell of the butane fuel.

If you use a butane lighter, you want to make sure that the brand of butane you purchase has a good reputation for having fuel with low impurities in it. You want as little impurities as possible because impurities will dramatically change the flavor of your cigar for the worst. You want to look for butane fuel that says it has zero impurities in it. While it may not be 100% free of impurities, the chances are it will be so low that it will not negatively impact your cigar's flavor. It is also good to have low impurity fuel, as this could cause the device not to work properly.

Another type of fuel to avoid at all costs is sulfur. Sulfur is normally found at the end of match tips and carries with it a strong smell and overpowering taste. Although many people enjoy lighting matches to start their cigar, the process can take several minutes due to the matches burning out quickly. This process can cause the cigar to be exposed to high levels of sulfur that can have a large effect on the cigar's taste.

Lighter fluid and butane have to be stored very carefully. Obviously, you need to keep these materials out from the reach of children. When you're filling up a lighter, make sure you do it somewhere where there aren't any sources of heat or spark to worry about. Liquid fueled lighters should be filled up over a sink, preventing any problems with the lighter fluid stripping paint or other finishes off of counters. Butane lighters should be left to sit for a while so that the fuel can warm up to room temperature before you actually use the device. With proper fuel and maintenance, either type of lighter can last more than a lifetime.
