Fun And Exciting Things To Do In North Wales

By Sam Jones

North Wales is a region of the Principality of Wales located on the middle to south western coast of the island of Great Britain. It is bordered on the east by the English counties of Shropshire and Cheshire. Its southern border is Mid Wales and its northern and western borders are the Atlantic Ocean. Along with the numerous castles and world heritage sites available for visit, pony trekking and white water rafting are among the fun things to do in North Wales.

Caernarfon Castle, erected in the Eleventh Century and completely rebuilt by English King Edward I in 1300, is where Prince Charles was invested with the insignia of the 21st Prince of Wales by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in July 1969, The Castle is situated in the County of Gwynedd.

The popular tourist village of Portmeirion in Gwynedd was designed and built in the style of an Italian village by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. It was completed in 1975. It is best known as 'The Village', the setting for the 1960s television show, 'The Prisoner', which starred Patrick McGoohan, combining spy fiction with psychological drama.

The Welsh Cob is an ideal horse for those with little or no experience with horseback riding. Guided pony trekking is a great way to explore beautiful scenery from the viewpoint of a saddle.

White water rafting is another great way to explore the countryside. Experienced guides take individuals or small groups of visitors at the National Whitewater Centre down the tumultuous waters of unspoilt Snowdonia. The Center also offers kayaking and canoe trips.

Many of the things to do in North Wales, like touring castles, riding horseback and riding the rapids all take a lot of energy. Fortunately, this can all be easily replenished by sampling some of the local delicacies such as Welsh cheeses, sausages and smoked fish washed down with one of the locally produced real, natural ciders.
