Deer Run Into Motorcycles, Too!

By Tamekia Goliday

A few months ago, a friend of ours hit a deer while riding his motorcycle - or rather the deer ran into him from the side. Luckily, he only suffered a minor injury to his foot. He goes on road trips almost every weekend, therefore he made a decision to put an electronic deer whistle repeller on his bike. Currently, whenever he's on the road, he just alarms the deer through his whistle and the deer would stay put instead of running across the road. He was very fortunate then. Now, to avoid the incident from recurring, he is taking preventive measures. The deer are moving this time of year with the change of seasons coming.

Are deer the most common cause of vehicular accidents? Deer are drawn at the edge of the roads because of the tall lawn and plant life. Often when they move about, the roads are their common pathways. It is inherent in them when they feel a threat, they run in crisscross pattern. Also, at night, deer get blinded by lights flashing from the car so they cannot see where they are supposed to go. The peak hours for the deer to eat is at dusk, a few hours before night time and dawn. Hence, it is to your advantage to be careful during these hours of the day.

Despite the kind of vehicle you drive, an added tip on behaviors of deer that you should know about is to exercise extreme vigilance when on two lane or rural roads. Our place is in the country. Every time we go out our house, we come across a deer or two and occasionally a herd. There are instances that packs search for food in the garden near the road. Usually when you find a deer, it has other company as well and you should be aware of deer crossings, therefore slower your pace. One objective of having deer crossing signs is to inform motor vehicle drivers that at that particular area, deer often cross it. When traveling at night, one thing we keep an eye on are cars with flashing lights that can blind your vision. The term "caught like a deer in the headlights" comes from a deer 'freezing' from being blinded by the lights of a vehicle. If this happens turn your lights off and then on again.

For defensive driving of motorcycles, the helmet is the most recommended by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. To prevent having stones and insects on your face, the helmet should at least have a face shield. You are not sufficiently protected with only a windshield or glasses.Make sure that the face shield is securely fastened to the helmet, scratch free because scratches can refract light and blur vision, use a tinted shield during the day and a clear one at night.Wearing heavy, over the ankle boots can help prevent burns from exhaust pipes, and impact from flying road debris. It was good that our friend had his tough footwear on. It reduced the level of damage he suffered during the accident, as told by his medical doctor. Boots with good grasps is what you should use so that it won't slide on the foot pegs.

Wear a decent pair of thick gloves to guard your hands from the sun, wind, cold and blisters and also minimize getting bruises, incisions and scratches. On your body, wear a leather gear or a fabric that is resilient to abrasions. This will minimize or keep you from getting harmed in case you crash. You have deer horns on your vehicle, so there is no reason not to install it on your motorbike where you are more exposed to, where every bit of additional protection is necessary.Enjoy your ride without the added stress of having to worry about hitting a deer.
