It all starts with the top three hotels in the San Jose area. Of course, that area essentially means the entire Silicon Valley. Though it's not a very sexy place to sojourn to, many frugal travelers opt to stay in San Jose and commute to the sights and attractions in San Francisco. A sage policy.
The big three in the area are the Fairmont, the Sainte Claire, and the Cypress. Any one of them delivers when it comes to personalized service, top notch amenities, and rarefied air. I'm not suggesting you walk about with your nose in the air, but when you walk into the lobby of any of these fine establishments, you'll know what I mean.
Be mindful. Don't shortchange your memories and don't sell your personal comfort down the river for a few more dollars. I understand the lure of a cheap shack on the outskirts of the airport is appealing to hardcore penny-pinchers, but for everyone else, the notion of staying in a lovely room will win out in the end.
