Take some tobacco out from your tobacco pouch and then put that tobacco down on a flat surface such as a kitchen table or desk. Remove clumps from the tobacco you placed on the table and feel the tobacco for moisture. If the tobacco is still fairly moist, then allow it to sit on the table and dry for a bit before packing it into your pipe.

Take the pile of tobacco on your table or desk and place pieces of it down into your pipe. Avoid pressing the tobacco down together, as this causes clumping to occur. If you push down on the tobacco to fill it with more, you could over pack it, which can ruin the flavor. Next you will want to take what is known as a tamper tool and use it to press the tobacco into the pipe bowl. You want it to fill up about half of the pipe bowl so that it is not over filled when you are ready to smoke. The tobacco should be spring like in the bowl.

Now you can stick the pipe in your mouth and light your bowl. This first draw you take on your pipe is only meant to be a test draw to make sure the bowl has been packed properly. If you take a draw and there is resistance, you will need to dump out the tobacco and repeat all the steps.
