Visit Barcelona, from Gaudi to Watching FC Barcelona, the World's Best

By Lance Lycett

If you've been considering a trip to Spain, then the city you have got to see is Barcelona. If you are going to Europe at all, or want to travel somewhere exciting from all around the world, Barcelona will continue to be right at the top of the list. You could spend a month and still have more to explore, from the dazzling sights of Gaudi and his design, the culture all across the sprawling city, and oh yes, if it is soccer season you can pick up FC Barcelona tickets to see the world's best team in action.

Barcelona is a town unlike any other. It has a unique match of ancient history and sights, modern culture and creativity, and everything between. It mixes many different cultures, languages, styles, customs and more. For example, although it's in Spain, Barcelona has deeper ties to its area, Catalonia. The Catalan language is spoken as frequently as not, in opposition to Spanish, and life is different in Barcelona and Catalonia then the remainder of the Spanish country.

One of the sides of Barcelona that most folks know about is the design and art of Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi is one of the most noted designers ever, and he had a completely unique style that brought organic forms and kinds into buildings and design. He was also well understood to be a bit out there and overboard with some of his decor, using bright colours and all sorts of standout elements, like mosaics and sculptures.

Around Barcelona, his influence can be felt everywhere. His shocking masterwork, La Sagrada Familia, is still being built but can be toured and viewed. His suburban park Parc Guell is a completely unique idea that's like a theme park it is so thoroughly designed and detailed, and his famous homes Casa Batllo and Casa Mila showcase different styles and are must-sees in the town.

Barcelona is also right on the Mediterranean coast, and you will find miles of stunning (topless) beaches. The town is also well known to showcase amazing fight, a wild nightlife and social scene that goes all across the night, and masses more to amuse you at all hours.

Of course, no trip to Barcelona would be complete without a trip to see the planet's best soccer team, FC Barcelona. The Barcelona football squad is packed with talent [*COMMA] and is coming off winning the 2011 Champion's League, officially making them the best club team in the world. They also showcase plenty of the same Spanish stars who played for the 2010 Spanish World Cup winning squad.

You will be crazy about Barcelona and all sides of its culture and life. Enjoy the great food and drink, and the social life at all hours. Visit all the pretty Gaudi sights, and make a journey to the beach. And whatever you do, do not forget to buy FC Barcelona tickets if you can, because they are as much of Barcelona and its life as anything else.

Nine Geologically Remarkable Areas Up and down the Glooscap Trail in Nova Scotia

By John Thompson

While the huge Bay of Fundy tides erode the imposing ocean cliffs and wash the shoreline a lot of intriguing rocks, fossils, zeolites, as well as semi-precious stones are revealed. Featuring a interesting geology going back billions of years the Bay of Fundy is eden for geologists.

The Glooscap Trail, given its name after the indigenous god who's believed to have produced FundyĆ¢€™s fantastic tides, extends down the Bay of Fundy coastline between the provincial border towards Amherst and Windsor.

1. Milford - Low oval to dome-shaped hills, known as Drumlins, are made up of sediment leveled and shaped by glaciers throughout the last 100,000 years in Nova Scotia. Drumlins make glorious farmlands. As well as the Milford and Shubenacadie areas of Nova Scotia, Halifax's Citadel Hill and the islands in Mahone Bay are instances of drumlins.

2. Noel Shore - Tightly folded Carboniferous sandstones and mudstones overlain by slightly tilted red Triassic sandstones and conglomerates are found along the Noel Shore. The line between these 2 sorts of rocks, known as an unconformity, can be seen at Wet Cove, near Pembroke. This unconformity signifies a gap of over 100 million years that's missing from these rocks.

3. Burntcoat Head - Found along the southern shore of the Minas Basin, Burntcoat Head is officially home to the highest tides ever recorded. On October 5, 1869 the most significant difference between low and high tide measured 54ft or 16.5m at Burntcoat Head.

Burntcoat Head is also a great location to view red Triassic sandstones and conglomerates, some of which display unique cross bedding created by currents of the rivers that once flowed thru this area.

4. Truro-Victoria Park - Victoria Park's Lepper Brook cuts through Carboniferous sandstones built up in ancient rivers.

5. Five Islands - Mi'kmaw legend claims that the native god Glooscap created these five islands - Moose, Diamond, Long, Egg and Apex - when he threw chunks of sod at Beaver. Signs throughout the park provide visitors with info about the region's geology and it is straightforward to spend the hours of low tide beachcombing. Sea dramatic cliffs with Jurassic lava flows covering essentially red Triassic sedimentary rocks, Jurassic sandstones and mudstones and a white layer that shows the border between the Triassic and Jurassic times - marking one of Earth's great extinction events.

6. Parrsboro - The largest community along the north shore of the Minas Basin, Parrsboro is a good place to witness the phenomenal power of the Fundy tides. These tides, the highest in the world, sculpt the shore daily exposing fossils, zeolites and semi-precious stones.

Canada's oldest dinosaur skeletons have been discovered in Jurassic sedimentary rocks near Parrsboro at Wasson Bluff. Rocks in this area are usually comprised of complexly faulted and tilted Jurassic sediments and volcanics, making it hard for the average beachcomber to see the fossils here.

Minerals like green celadonite, stilbite and chabazite can also be found through this region. Additionally, amazing perspectives can be enjoyed from the provoking basalt cliffs at Cape d'Or, near Advocate Harbour.

7. Port Greville - 2 small continental pieces collided and slid against each other roughly 390 million years ago to form what is now the Province of Nova Scotia. The boundary, called the Cobequid-Chedabucto Fault System, similar to California's San Andreas Fault, is an important feature of geological and topographical maps of Nova Scotia. Where the Fundy lowlands meet the Cobequid Highlands, just north of Parrsboro at Crossroads, is the best place to view this fault.

8. Cape Chignecto - Comprised of 600-foot soaring cliffs, 18 kilometres of pristine shore, steep trenches and old-growth forests, Cape Chignecto Provincial Park is found on the Western tip of the Avalon Eco-Zone along the Bay of Fundy. Not only is the park an excellent spot to study the tides, as they continuously lap at the base of the cliffs, Cape Chignecto is home to a couple of the province's most important geological deep valleys.

As Fundy's dynamic tides beat against and wear away the Devonian-Carboniferous rocks at Cape Chignecto, a trio of sea stacks, called the 3 Sisters, were made and stand watchfully over the Chignecto Bay.

9. Joggins - Found at the head of the Bay of Fundy, the 75-foot high cliffs at Joggins are exposed to recurring tidal action and as Fundy's 50-foot tides wear away the cliffs, new fossils are revealed including a rich range of flora, diverse amphibian fauna, important trackways and some of the world's first reptiles. The Joggins Fossil Cliffs became famous in 1851 with the discovery of fossilized tree trunks found in their original positions. When these trunks were closer inspected, little bones were noticed which turned out to be one of the most vital fossil findings in Nova Scotia. These remains were from one of the planet's first reptiles and evidence that land animals had lived in the "Coal Age". Today the Joggins Fossil Cliffs are recognized in a top-class palaeontological site.

Travel on a Budget without Making these Mistakes

By Gavin Caleb

Budget travelers are increasing by the minute. More and more people are getting into the bandwagon of shoestring traveling because of all the perks that come with it. The best perk is of course to enjoy a vacation without having to spend a lot. Of course, like with any other good thing, this one has some drawbacks too that you need to keep an eye on if you don't want to end up having a disastrous vacation. Here are some tips on how to keep things right during your budget travel.

Trading safety or cleanliness for a cheap hotel price

When looking for a hotel, it's okay to sacrifice small things to cut down the price. For example, you might opt to get a smaller room or a room without a flat screen TV just to pay less. That's all right. But never sacrifice safety or cleanliness for this. If you're reading online reviews and you find out that the hotel is plagued with bed bugs or the rooms are unbearably smelly, don't take the risk and go find something better. If you find out that the overly cheap hotel you're thinking of booking is located in a shady part of the city, don't endanger your safety to save cash. You might end up losing even more money when you get mugged or get hospitalized after catching a disease.

Under packing to travel light

Some airline tickets that are of discounted rates don't allow as much baggage weight as regular plane tickets. This is why, many tourists make the mistake of under packing and then ending up buying clothes or things in the vacation destination, which costs them more in the long run. There's nothing wrong with packing light but you must not under pack. There's a big difference between the two. With the former, you are able to bring all the things that you need by employing some creative tactics such as packing multi-purpose items or including clothes that are easy to wash. The latter, meanwhile, means packing insufficiently for the trip.

Going during off peak season

It's a common advice for budget travelers to go travel during the off-peak season. And that's actually a very good way to save money. But what some people do wrong is that they go to the place at the wrong time. For example, if you're planning to have a beach vacation, it's not a good idea to book your flight during the winter just so you can save money. How can you expect to have fun at the beach when you're shivering cold? It's all right to avoid the peak season like the summer or spring break, but at least schedule your vacation during a time when the sun is out to shine on you.

Getting the cheapest travel insurance

Visitor medical insurance or visitors health insurance is essential to any trip. While it would be smart to shop around to find good rates, it's a bad idea to get the cheapest in the market that doesn't have sufficient coverage. Be sure to get a plan that has everything you need to be covered for your trip.

Riding a 10 feet wave: The only way to feel the raw power of the Bay of Fundy

By Mike Postma

The Bay of Fundy has the extraordinary tidal bore phenomenon, which is where the incoming tide overpower the current of outflowing estuaries and rivers. Two times a day, around high tide, an enormous amount of seawater surges out of the Bay of Fundy directly into the estuaries and rivers which feed the bay. The narrowing riverbanks force the soaring tidal water in a incredible surge and often also a noticeable standing wave, at times 1 meter (3 ft) high! While the roaring and swirling seawater charges upstream at speeds in the region of 15 kilometers per hour (10 miles per hour) it produces rapids in its wake which can be in the range of 3 to 3.5 meters (10-12 ft) high.

Most rivers draining into the upper Bay of Fundy between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have tidal bores. Most of them are located on the Nova Scotia side of the bay. But, you may have trouble finding them without the help of some locals. A few great places to see a tidal bore are:

- The Petitcodiac River. Previously the greatest tidal bore in all of Canada And America exceeded 2 metres (6.6 feet); but, causeway development as well as substantial silting decreased it to nothing more than a small swell, until the causeway gates ended up being opened up on April 14, 2010 as a component of the Petitcodiac River Restoration project and as a direct result the tidal bore started to develop just as before.
- The bore is quickest and largest in a few of the smaller sized rivers which hook up to the Bay of Fundy such as the River Hebert and Maccan River on Cumberland Basin (approximately 10 mins out of Amherst), the St. Croix, Herbert and Kennetcook Rivers inside the Minas Basin, and also the Salmon River in Truro.

Visitors usually like to visit the sites with some interpretation panels like the ones found along the Maccan River and the Shubenacadie River near the South Maitland Tidal Bore look-off. You'll want to remember that the bore time does not necessarily match with the high tide times listed on a tide chart. It all depends on exactly where along the river you are watching, so it's best to check with some of the local outfitters beforehand.

As fascinating as it is to observe the tidal bore from the riverbanks, it is much more entertaining to try white water river rafting in it. This kind of adventure is exclusive to the Bay of Fundy since the Shubenacadie River, found in Nova Scotia, is considered the one and only location on the planet where you can enjoy tidal bore rafting.

In the summer months, experienced guides take visitors on a one-of-a-kind, upriver rafting adventure. These adventures often also include an extremely fun mud sliding session. Tidal bore rafting might just be the best way to experience the Bay of Fundy tides first hand!
