Areas For Alaska Brown Bear Viewing

While some individuals want to view animals from a distance, others like to get up close. In the case of Alaska Brown Bear viewing Alaska, individuals can often do both. For, some of the most incredible and magical spots to view bears is in the state. Take for example, Brook Falls in Katmai National Park, the McNeil River, Lake Clark National Park or Redoubt Bay, all of which host a number of black and brown bears.

If interested in visiting these areas, it is possible to take a boat or airplane ride to the area. While this is the case, it is important to plan a trip which will align with the best viewing dates. In most cases, areas in which salmon and other fish spawn are most likely going to have the most bear populations.

In the Summer, Chinitna Bay is also an excellent spot for bear watching. For, the bears are often moving between locations in search of food. In addition, as bears are attracted to beach grasses, shellfish and salmon, the bay is often a popular location to see bears feeding in shallow waters. If desiring to travel between different viewing areas, there are ATV, towed trailers and personal guides which can help make doing so easy.

Redoubt Bay offers some of the best viewing between June and August by way of a covered boat with an expert guide. Whereas, Katmai National Park and Brook Falls are often better in the month of July. During this time, bears often frequent Brook Falls and snap fish atop the waterfalls. While, those visiting in late Summer may want to make a stop at Lake National Park as viewing in this area is much better in late August and early September.

While it can often be hard to win a spot in the lottery, McNeil River State Game Sanctuary is an extremely popular place to view bears. In fact, it is so popular that the area is heavily controlled, with visitors selected by a lottery in order to protect the area. As such, individuals and families interested in visiting the area need to contact the location for more information.

If still in need of assistance with regards to travel plans, contacting a professional tour guide in the area is often advised. In the case of the more adventurous, the bear population is so large that most people see bears on different types of trips offered in the area. For example, bears can often be sighted from flightseeing planes, boats, tour buses as well as personal and rental cars.

If looking for guaranteed viewing, visitors can check out the Alaska Zoo or Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. For, each are home to brown and black bears. In addition, the zoo is also home to a number of polar bears. Whereas, the biology staff which are well educated on bears and associated behaviors can often provide insight and information on different types of bears.

When planning on taking such a trip, there are several options. One of which is booking an Alaskan cruise, or flying into the area and visiting various areas by tour busy, rental car or other transportation. In all cases, it is important to inquire as to activities are included in package deals in order to properly budget for this type of trip.
