Things To Expect During Your Chicago Sailing Lessons

By Martha Miller

You can go surfing anywhere in the world. You can go climbing anywhere in the world. How about sailing? Thanks to sailing charters and schools, you can learn to sail and place your sailing escapade anywhere in the world as well. Here is why Chicago sailing lessons are a great adventure...

Fresh knowledge, new skill. Learning how to sail is a refreshing new found knowledge that has been waiting for you to learn. There is so much useful information that you can tack onto everyday life and things that you honestly never knew. The skills that will be taught and left for you to develop are amazing. Tasks that you never even thought you would bring yourself on. The skills learned in cruising lessons will be part of your achievements as you advance and develop them.

Check to make sure that the line you want to take to the winch leads (points) up to the winch. You may find on some boats that the line leads down to a winch--and that can be dangerous. You can change the lead of a line with a block. Sail sheets (control lines) pass through blocks first before they get to the winch. Blocks that help point the line in the correct direction to the winch are often called "lead blocks" because of the "lead" or "redirect" the line in the correct direction to the winch.

Knowing how the sheets work is an important skill here. For example, if you were cruising upwind you would use a zig-zag motion called tacking to use the wind to your advantage as much as possible. Generally, this works better and is much easier on a crewed sailboat and working as a team.

Intellectual challenge. The adventure of learning how to sail does not end with the physical tasks that you will face, knowing when and how to use the elements of nature for a satisfying cruising activity is as demanding as pulling the anchor as you get ready to set sail. Discernment and judgment are commonly used in cruising, and it plays a very significant role in determining cruising success and safety.

A tall ship, for example, is a completely different experience to say learning on a skiff. It depends on what sets of skills you want to learn and what you'd like to experience. The next part is the actual cruising which I have no doubts you will have a great time learning.

New friends and trusting them. An adventure has an element of doing something that you will not normally do on any given day. Apart from the adventure of learning something new and doing something unfamiliar, you will meet new people particularly your skipper, instructor, and classmates. You will have to trust them during the learning process. It would be easy to do on dry land, but once you get out into the water and all your fears set in, this act will be quite difficult. Trusting a stranger with your life under vulnerable circumstances is an adventure in itself.

The greatest escape. Cruising lessons are as refreshing and relaxing as cruising on your own. You get to intently focus on learning this new skill that you detach from that deadline you have to meet, that leaking faucet which is due for repair, that new route you need to take to get to work and all of the life's burdens. As you get deeper into cruising, you will discover that it is a great way to clear your mind and frankly speaking take a break from it all.
