Delray Beach Economy At A Glance

By Jony Mozen

South Florida is one of those places people think of when they consider retirement areas. Not all of the cities in this area are populated with retirees escaping the harsh weather of the northern states. A look at the Delray Beach economy statistics and demographics will give a perfect example of one city that invites a much younger group to constitute the average population.

By reading the last US census you will see that unemployment in this area is points below the national average. Another aspect that does not show in the census is that job growth potential is expected to rise over forty percent over the next five years. In a two income household the average income falls into the range of between fifty and sixty five thousand dollars a year and workers can expect to have full time work in this city.

There has been a twenty five year revitalization plan in progress for this city. The downtown area has been put on a master plan schedule by the city commission and the community redevelopment and this has resulted in many new shops, dining spots attorneys, architects doctors and financial businesses. The advent of such vigorous growth in public and private development has inspired many to work, live and play in the Urban Core of this city.

The city council has directed millions of dollars towards the improvement of the city center. A continuous time controlled growth and development plan is constantly contributing to the economic growth of this area. New opportunities to begin businesses are made available on a regular basis as the older buildings are renovated and with the new businesses come new employment opportunities. Retail shops and offices offer jobs for sales personnel and management.

The largest employer is the medical center but there are over ten other large businesses who employ over two hundred fifty people each. Many of these places of business may be considered retail or service oriented because they cater to the public. Target is one example and others include hotels and lodges in the area.

Employers with smaller staff are usually involved with restaurants, retail shops and financial offices. These operations rarely have more than ten employees at any given time. Many of them are the newer companies that have evolved during the renovation period and are located in the city hub on Atlantic.

There are also multiple hotels and rentals located on the beach front. From these vacation spots people are free to enjoy all the activities offered by ocean front vendors. The city has a four mile stretch of beautiful sandy beaches that reach along the entire eastern border of town. The businesses that attend the beach crowd are open late into the night in stark contrast to the surrounding cities. This area also borders a National Wildlife Refuge that is part of the Everglades.

With slightly over sixty thousand residents in town this area is set to prosper and can offer great opportunities for new business owners and those looking for permanent full time employment alike.
