The southern coast of Portugal is renowned for it's long stretch of beautiful beaches and what seems like an endless coastline. Hidden coves and an impressive three thousand hours of sunshine each year, tempt hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. With a vast array of hotels and resorts to choose from, visitors could be forgiven for declaring that they are "spoiled for choice." Albufeira is derived from the Arabic term Albuhera, which means "castle of the Sea." Some would argue, that this resort offers some of the best beaches in the region. Similarly, there are plenty of golf courses, restaurants and a bustling nightlife. The local people are very inviting and will give a warm welcome. The contrasting landscape varies between open marshland and pine forests, which can be enjoyed whilst sampling the local cuisine, in one of the many outdoor restaurants. International cuisine is readily available, however, the freshly caught local sardines, piri piri dishes and balcalhow (cod that is salted and dried) are definitely worth trying.
Steeped in history, visitors will have many places of interest to choose from. To list them all would be beyond the scope of this article, however, The Municipal Museum Of Archaeology, is well worth a visit and is crammed with artefact's connected with the history of the city. Similarly, the Torre Sineira (bell tower) was built in 1869 and contains a belfry with eight huge bells.
Vilamoura is visited each week by an array of cruise liners and yachts docking in the new marina. Plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs can also be found in the cosmopolitan harbor area. As well as quaint white washed houses, visitors will also find numerous leisure and sports activities to entertain.
