An Overview Of Tanzania Safari Tour

By Kerri Stout

Safari, is a Swahili word that means journey. East Africa offers a wide range of tourist attraction packages which range from beautiful coastal beaches to the untamed wildlife sanctuaries. If you are thinking of a Tanzania safari tour, it is important that you do your research very well to ensure you achieve the most out of it. Planning well involves selecting a suitable tourist operator and choosing the right time of the year to visit.

Among the first things you need to when planning a safari to Tanzania is conducting a research on what to expect. This includes checking which type of attractions are on offer and which places you might want to visit. This will of course depend on your budget, season and the number of days you want to visit. From the sandy beaches of Dareesalam, wild plains of Serengeti to old ruins of Zanzibar.

Some of the common asked questions is how rugged a camping safari can be and how the service provider will choose lodges and tented camps. Camping safari, which is usually considered low cost, involves guests and staff sleeping in private tents in designated campsites in or near national parks. Depending on your budget, you will be able to find appropriate lodge arrangements.

Northern Tanzania has many national parks, game reserves and a conservation area which provides a wide choice should you be thinking of a game drive. Serengeti national park, covering an area of 14800 square kilometers, equal in size to Northern Ireland, is the oldest park in Tanzania and one of the greatest wildlife refuges in the world. It is famed with the yearly wildlife migration and is contiguous with Maasai Mara game reserve of Kenya.

Ngorongoro conservation area is another site worth visiting. Bordering Lake Natron in the north east, lake Manyara to the east and Lake Eyasi to the south, it has a crater lake 610 meters deep from its rim and 20 kilometers in diameter. The crater is home to many species of birds and wild game, including the endangered black rhino.

Tarangire and Lake Manyara national parks also provide a wide variety of wildlife view. Tarangire is home to large herds of elephants, buffalo, rhino, wildebeest, impala, and greater kudu among others. This attractive park, with its statuesque baobab trees, is the main refuge for wildlife from the surrounding part of the Great Rift Valley during the dry season.

The big five and wildebeest migration are the biggest safaris attractions. The big five, which hunted hunters, are the rhino, lion, elephant, Cape buffalo and the leopard can easily be seen in Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara national parks. If you visit during early July and late September, you may be able to witness the migration of over 1.2 million wildebeest between the Maasai Mara game reserve in Kenya and Serengeti national park in Tanzania. The highlight of this migration is usually in February when wildebeests give birth to around 7,000 babies daily.

Going on safari in east Africa is an exhilarating experience you can have in life. However, to ensure that you get the most of it, ensure that you plan well in advance and select the most suitable operator. Consider asking friends and relatives who have had a successful travel in East Africa, to recommend the service provider they used.
