Picking From Different Turkey Hunting Seats

By Essie Osborn

The ability to sit completely still during turkey hunts is crucial, but you also must be able to sit in a position that allows your gun to be aimed and ready to shoot. Turkeys can detect the slightest pinpoint movement, so you will not be able to raise your gun to get it aimed. Comfortable sitting is an important part of being able to remain still. To accomplish this, you will need to pick from the different types of turkey hunting seats.

Vests are one of the types available. A vest, in this case, is multifunctional. It has multiple pockets to keep necessary items handy such as calls, and it will contain some sort of attached cushion to sit on with padding along the back. The back padding is designed to provide some cushioning for sitting against trees.

You can also choose a type called a carry-along. There are multiple models available, with different features. The one thing they all have in common is the portability and lightness to be able to carry it around as needed. Several models have straps that can be used to attach the seat or cushion to your backpack for easy transport.

Similar to a carry along cushion, the ground seat is lightweight and may also have straps for attaching it to a backpack. The main difference is that these types often have a back section and substantially thicker cushioning, making them a bit more comfortable and better suited for hunts that will last the whole day. They fold for easy carrying and tend to have short legs to raise you off the ground a little.

Low profile chairs are a choice as well. Similar to the ground seat and carry-along, they are designed to be easy to transport. They are specifically designed to provide seating higher off the ground, which is a good idea in wet areas. This type of seat also usually has a more sturdy and supportive back piece with adjustable legs and arms.

There are also options specifically designed for hunts in blinds. Portable and fixed blinds often pose a problem with trying to use a ground seat. They do not allow you to sit up high enough to see out the holes or windows in a blind. This type of seat gives you the height you need but also provides you with the lightweight construction for portability.

It is important for the seat you choose to have a camouflage print. You must blend in with your surroundings as much as possible. Turkeys have the ability to see disturbances or differences in the background. Camouflage seating helps hide you even further and prevent a colored seat from making you visible and scaring off the turkeys.

When you are trying to choose the right seat, keep in mind that you will likely need more than one. Changes in location or how you hunt will require a different type of seat. Think about your typical location and its environment. Areas with a thoroughly wet ground will not allow you to use a seat with four straight legs without sinking. A seat with rounded half horseshoe legs will not sink but it will not allow you to back up to a tree to hide.
