Experience The Best Of Summer In Alaska With Ketchikan Fishing Charters

By Krystal Branch

Few states in the USA can claim such huge swathes of pristine wilderness as Alaska can. In winter it may be difficult to appreciate the wildlife as you zip past on a snowmobile in freezing temperatures. In summer, however, Alaska really comes into its own with mountains to climb, forests to explore and waters to fish. Ketchikan fishing charters are one way to help you experience the beauty of the state and to have a great Alaskan summer.

Ketchikan lies at the foot of stunning Deer Mountain on an island named Revillagigedo. Only a narrow strait separates it from nearby Gravina Island. The city is nearly 240 miles to the south of Juneau, making it the most southerly of Alaska's cities.

In terms of its climate, the region may remind you of Scotland. It's very rainy in winter but not as cold as it is further north. Summers are cool to mild and while you won't exactly experience beach weather, it's perfect for outdoor pursuits because it's not too hot.

Ketchikan is a popular port for cruise ships and also has an important timber industry. However, it's as the salmon capital of the world that the city draws visitors from all over. The waters here are home to various species of salmon, including king salmon, red salmon, pink salmon and chum salmon.

The area is also known for other species of fish that you can catch here. The ocean has halibut, cod and red snapper, as well as crab and shrimp. In the freshwater streams and lakes you'll find trout, grayling and steelhead, among others. A charter will take you on the trip of your choice, whether you want to go out onto the ocean or would prefer to hike into the wilderness and pick some berries along the way too.

There are many ways to prepare your catch. Grill it and season with just a little lemon juice or skip the heat altogether and use the acidic juice to 'cook' the fish in the style of a South American ceviche. Poach it or roast it slowly and gently in the oven or on the fire. If for some reason there are leftovers, use them to make fish and crab cakes or spreads that will appeal to the kids.

Of course you don't have to catch the fish yourself in order to enjoy it. Ketchikan has plenty of fish markets and restaurants. The city has a lot to offer those visitors who don't like fishing, so you can bring the whole family on our trip. The kids will love the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, a zip-line adventure or to see real totem poles. Otherwise, simply take a relaxing stroll through the streets. Creek Street is especially picturesque with its waterfront setting.

A great accommodation option is to stay at a lodge in the area. Many lodges can even arrange boat or hiking trips for you. You'll also find several companies that offer Ketchikan fishing charters. Bear in mind though that summer is high season in Alaska, so it might be best to pre-book online.
