How To Fuel An Airplane Using An Aircraft Maintenance Ladder

By Eugenia Dickerson

Putting fuel to an airplane is not an easy job because it is not the same as filling up other vehicles. You have to follow a set of instructions so you will be equipped with the knowledge of refueling one and ensuring that it will land safely. You can use an aircraft maintenance ladder so you can reach the pit and calculate the amount you have to produce.

With every plane, there are different kinds of fuel grade. You have to determine which one you need to use. Check the make and model and go through the documents which can prove what it will be needing. You can also ask the crew about what is typically used with the vehicle you will be assisting.

Another important thing you should be aware about is the kind of fuel you will fill. Most of them do not carry the same diesel. One aircraft can be exclusively run on a different brand. This will always depend on what will withstand the length of the flight and the distance they will be going to.

You have to be able to connect the ground wire with the aircraft you are handling. Find out which tools you should be using as you install this. Be careful in setting the wires to its places so it will function well when you are manipulating the controls.

Some wings are located higher that most of them. Keep the ladder to be in the center of where the fuel cap is located. It should be standing to where the fuel tank is furthest. From afar, try and locate where it should be sitting on before you get the ladder.

Be able to drag the hose out and reach it as far as you need it to be. This will help you as you start refueling. Choose the one that can reach the cap especially if it is put up high in the side. You will need assistance in dragging the hose out of the safety volt.

Start to remove the cap from where you are standing on. You can see that it is not how you fill your car. For those planes which are larger, the wings must be refueled first. This is because it will need balance to keep the plane together. Before you start, you have to make sure that all the valves have been opened up correctly.

If in case it is still not opened up, check with your pilot or any maintenance staff on the ground. The sides of the wings should be fueled up before you start with the center of the engine. If this goes well, you have to bring back and install the cap and make sure it is sealed tight. Begin winding up the hose for the fuel.

Start by winding up all ground wires. Carefully inspect the cap if it has been shut off securely. Check if the water is put together with the fuel. Inspect this before you start and while you are refueling. As you hold the hose, touch out the nozzle and set it in the lip of the engine so it will flow in two paths. When you go around its tail, utilize an aircraft maintenance ladder to successfully finish the procedure.
