Helpful Hints For Those Who Are Moving

By Joyce McIntosh

While we often look forward to relocating to a new house or apartment, few people really enjoy all the work that accompanies this move. Organization is the key to keeping your stress level in check. So if you will be moving in the near future, consider some of the following helpful moving suggestions.

Making a big checklist can be a very important first step in the moving process. You can divide up the tasks into categories. For instance, you will need to turn off utilities; cable and internet service at your old place and turn it on in the new place. Don't forget to contact other companies, such as water delivery and newspaper delivery services and inform them about the changes.

Once you know the moving date, much of the aforementioned tasks can be dealt with quickly. Still, there is quite a bit of packing that will need to be completed and this typically is the biggest chore of the moving process. The earlier you start, the better, and you could make a goal of packing up two or three boxes per day until you move out. Begin with the easy stuff, which includes all the items you don't really use. Pack up the pictures and knickknacks that decorate your rooms, books you don't use daily, clothes that don't fit the current season and kitchen gear you don't need daily. Look for free boxes on sites such as Craiglist and Freecycle.

After your finish packing, label each box as to its content. You don't have to list every single item in the box, but just state generally that it is filled with "dishes & kitchenware" or "linens." You also should identify where the box should be moved into such as the kitchen, guest room or living room. You could use a different colored marker for each room to make moving even easier.

Labels and boxes go hand in hand, and you need to write the contents of each box on the sides and top, as well as what room it should go to at the new apartment or house. Get a pack of multi-colored sharpies and you can color code the boxes. You can assign a specific color to a specific room, so that people moving the boxes don't even have to give the box a second glance.

Often, there is a gap between the date you have to move out of your old place and can move into your new home. Also, if you would like to do some work on your home, such as painting, construction and replacing flooring, then putting your things in a self-storage unit is an ideal solution. When searching for a Bath, Okemos, Haslett or East Lansing-area self-storage facility, look for a company that provides excellent security, such as having security cameras on the premises as well as plenty of lighting and fencing. It also is a good idea to look for a company that offers month-to-month rentals and doesn't ask for a security deposit, as this can save you some money. You also should find a place that allows you access your belongings at any time, day or night.
