How To Maximize Your Car's GPS Satellite Reception

By Yaha Jones

While car GPS units usually work flawlessly, occasionally you might experience problems with your car GPS satellite reception. It can be frustrating; especially when you need to get somewhere and your unit won't lock onto a signal. If the GPS is your only source of direction, things become even more frustrating. If you can't get your GPS unit to lock onto a signal, try these simple steps to get reception.

Especially today, many people prefer to have everything in one, so many people use their smart phones as their GPS unit also. And while this may seem convenient, it does have definite drawbacks that using a stand alone GPS unit will address. Like what?

First, consider battery life. While trying access GPS satellites, a standard smart phone may last as little as three hours. While this might be okay for shorter drives, for longer road trips, it can truly sabotage your vacation.

The way to deal with poor GPS satellite reception is to make sure you have a signal before you actually drive away. Wait until the GPS unit locks until you leave. When you need to use your GPS, turn it on and let it sit out in the open until you get a signal. Keep it on for awhile after you get a signal so the data can download.

Signal boosters can also be effective at combating certain types of window coatings. If you have a thick film or tint on your car windows it can interfere with the GPS signal. A signal booster can enhance the signal, allowing you to use your GPS without having to remove the tint from your windows.

Newer GPS units feature more reliable, more efficient GPS antennas that allow stronger locks, for longer periods of time. This means more reliable directions, longer, for you. Many are also able to achieve a lock faster, which means your trip can get under way that much faster. Clearly, if looking for a new way to get around with GPS, the best investment comes from purchasing a stand alone GPS unit.
