If you hear individuals discussing "wilderness" on the Garden Route, they are not talking in general terms about the natural surroundings, but about a gorgeous vacation spot which is suitable for couples and families. The following article offers some basic details about exactly what to expect when booking a holiday in Wilderness.

Wilderness is a little village that is located along the national road called the N2, in between Mossel Bay and Storm's River. We suggest you keep your camera ready whilst driving along this road because the N2 runs parallel to the coastline and provides astonishing views of the ocean, the beaches and the high cliffs. The whole of the Garden Route is incredibly beautiful and dotted with lakes and stunning countryside.

Wilderness accommodation is quite stylish without being overly expensive. There are hotels all around the town center with beautiful yards and have their own swimming pools if you don't feel like driving. The town is really small and is situated in between a beautiful lagoon and a beach, that was just recently awarded the worldwide "Blue Flag" status. The little town is completely tailored to making tourists comfy so you will find lots of various restaurants, a shopping center and a bank and an art gallery. There is also a church and a doctors office. So when you arrive in Wilderness, you don't have to drive to get anywhere.

If you do not mind a little bit of driving, then there are some really gorgeous places you can visit on outing. Wilderness is 15km away from George, 40km from Mossel Bay, 60km from Oudtshoorn and 40km from Knysna. The roads are beautiful and you can even take the back roads to appreciate the wilder side of this area.

It is highly advised to visit the Goukama Nature Reserve which is fantastic with its humungous yellow wood trees, its bush buck and duiker. You will see the bush pig taking a mud bath and additionally monkeys and baboons going about their business if you are lucky. The caracal (rooikat) and the leopard just come out during the night so they are hard to detect. Camping is allowed in specific areas, but there arerules; you normally will not be allowed to light any fires therefore will need to bring gas along for cooking.

The sea in Wilderness is warm and calm enough for swimming, and this is not usually the case in the Cape. This section of coastline gets the warm ocean current from the Indian Ocean, which is what keeps the environment warm here all year round.

Wilderness has the art for hospitality and has been renowned for it since the 1800's. Coming to Wilderness, you will not get a modern-day and cold tourist area, however a warm-hearted and lively location that is rich in heritage and crafts. The gorgeous craft markets that are held once or twice a month are a wonderful occasion to get to know the local individuals, who are at all times friendly and eager to talk to travelers.

Wilderness is a place where you can take a tranquil beach-side holiday, where you can appreciate nature or where you can go on outings to the gorgeous surrounding towns. You can take beautiful drives to locations like "Map of Africa" viewpoint or Dolphin Point, or you can take pleasure in many of the activities and sports available in the area.

Best of all, you can just appreciate the easygoing and friendly setting of a beach-side resort with an "African Twist" to it.
