Rapeseed Yellow Fields at Luoping

By Jonny Blair

Luoping is a fantastic off the beaten track place to witness natural yellow Canola Fields in an unknown village called Jin Ji Cun. This part of China is remote and inspiring.

Luoping is so isolated and remote that almost every travel guide book for China doesn't even mention it! It's certainly not a well known tourist spot, even more reason for you to check it out!

What are the Yellow Canola Fields in Jin Ji Cun?

This series of yellow fields are so coloured due to the flowers. The rapeseed harvest in Spring contains a load of yellow flowers adding magnificent colour to the region. It is used to make Canola Oil.

When to visit the Yellow Fields?

You can ONLY see these yellow canola fields in Spring time, so this is ESSENTIAL to know. Generally this means January to April, but really do your research first. Early March seems to be a good time.

How to get to the Canola Fields at Jin Ji Cun?

It's quite tricky to get to. Start off in the city of Luoping and get a bus out to Jin Ji Cun. Check with the locals by showing them photos of the fields and the Chinese character names. From there it's a 20 minute bus ride.

You pay on cash on the local bus, which is like a green mini-bus. The cost is 5RMB.

The bus will get you there in around 20 - 25 minutes and you will notice the yellow fields on the right hand side.

What price is it to visit the Yellow Fields?

There isn't one. They are remote lonely fields in the Chinese countryside and wilderness. You just walk down the path to the fields and that's it - no charge whatsoever. Enjoy - IT'S FREE!!!!!

What is there to do at the Yellow Fields near Luoping?

The yellow canola fields are simply there to gaze at and admire. There's a path you can follow which leads through a local market. Buy some local snacks such as potato, chicken and honey treats and enjoy the views!

To get really decent views over the yellow Canola fields, head to the top of one of the small hills in and around the fields. There are custom built paths up to the top.

After your walk round the yellow canola fields, simply head to the village called Ji Ji Cun to get a bed for the night. That was you can stay across the road from the fields and see them for sunrise and sunset.

Are these yellow canola fields at Jin Ji Cun special?

NO, of course not - these types of fields are everywhere, including parts of China, Australia, Canada and the USA. BUT this is a great place to see a vast number of them looking so pretty. It is also a fantastic off the beaten track spot and it was my first time to see these types of yellow fields. I really recommend it!

What else can you do near the Jin Ji Cun canola fields?

As with most places there are other things to see and do. A nearby national park boasts the impressive 7 Dragons Waterfalls and there is a temple on a hill. You can also get a local ride on the back of a cart driven by a yak. But the main event here is definitely these pretty Yellow Canola Fields. Worth a visit.
