Campervan Hire in Sydney

By Tim Ahern

If you're considering campervan hire in Australia, then the most obvious place to pick it up or drop it off has to be Sydney. There are numerous reasons why you want to rent your camper and Sydney and I'm here just to let you know the most basic of these reasons.

With over 5 million people, Greater Sydney is Australia's largest city. With such a population there is plenty of supply of virtually any service you can ask for and finding a campervan hire company is no exception. Sydney's central location on the east coast also puts in the in best proximity of all capital cities to get to any other major city in the country. It is around 1000km to both Brisbane to the north and Melbourne to the south. It is only 1400km to Adelaide to the west and a mere 290km to Canberra - Australia's capital city. No other city has bragging rights on being so central to all the other cities of attraction.

Sydney is also the main transit port in Australia. Sydney airport is the nations busiest and the 31st busiest in the world. Chances are that if you fly in or out of this island continent, then you will pass through Sydney. That being the case you will also see that you can catch virtually any form of public transport from here to any other part of the country.

With the plethora of transport choices that such a large city offers, why would you want to hire a campervan when there are so many other options? Well, the answer lies in the public transport options outside of Sydney and the ease and control that a campervan can give you. Once you get out of the major cities public transport options become fairly limited by world standards. This is brought on by the massive size of the country, the small population for that size and wealth of the nation that allows most people to own their own car, hence not needing public transport. Once you get out of the major cities, and in particular if you want to get off the national highway, then getting public transport becomes quite painful.

Another reason you might consider a campervan is that there are a great many things to do on the outskirts of Sydney. Down south there is Cronulla and its glorious beaches and surf, and further south the Royal National Park. To the west is the Blue Mountains and to the north is the central coast and the famous Hunter Valley. All of these are quicker to reach in your own vehicle and you can stay at any one of them overnight in the camper you arrived in

Not everyone enjoys staying in a campervan though, but having one available will definitely expand that options of the places you can visit in Australia. By far, the city with the most campervan hire options is Sydney. There are over 30 different companies to choose from there, hence making it also the city with the best deals and greatest variety of styles. (Kombi anyone?) It is good to be armed with this information as you do your research. You will find plenty of price comparison and booking websites that will only show results for the 5 top companies for the dates you want. Some will also show around 10 companies. You want to keep your eye out for sites that list at least 20 different companies in the results before you commit to anything or you will likely be paying too much.
