Route 66 Is One Of The Major Travel Destinations By Car

It is called the Mother Road and is the road trip to end all road trips. One of the most famous travel destinations by car in the United States is 2,448 miles long. Tourists have driven its length or parts of its length since it was opened in 1926.

Travelers have driven across the country on this most revered route ever since. Start from St. Louis and travel some interesting detours for sightseeing purposes. Visit legendary roadside buildings and other attractions along the highway from St. Louis to Chicago.

Enter the city of St. Louis by crossing the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. It was the original way to cross the Mississippi. Stop to admire the Gateway Arch, perhaps taking the ride through this famous landmark. It is considered the gateway to the American West.

You may know that pioneers in covered wagons going to settle the West, carved out the trail that is now Route 66. A Museum of Westward Expansion located at the site of the Arch has exhibits detailing this bit of history. Drive by Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, home to the All Shook Up, peanut butter and banana custard shake. It is the perfect sweet treat for Elvis fans.

Visit the Meramec Caverns, known as the hideout of the Jesse James gang. They allegedly rode their horses into the caverns and stashed their loot. Then drive through the beautiful area surrounding the Ozarks. Stop to view Sheas, a gas station with exhibits honoring Route 66.

The Mother Road has attracted vacationers since it was opened in 1926. It has been one of the major travel destinations by car in America. It offers sight after sight as it winds towards westward on the way to California. You and your family will be tempted to linger at many places where historical markers are interesting. Drive a few days or a few weeks for a unique trip.
