Top Places to Visit on a Florida Vacation

By Shane McConnell

It is a fallacy that there are very few things to do on a winter Florida vacation other than the theme parks and water slides. While there are the traditional places to visit, there is much more to Florida than Disney. So, pack your bags, get away from the cold and snow, and head to some of the best places to hang out in Florida.

One of the best destinations in the winter in Florida is Orlando because the temperature is mild and the sun is warm. SeaWorld is another iconic winter Florida vacation spot but not many know about Discovery Cove that offers a limited number of guests. With only one thousand people, this is perfect for those trying to fight the crowds. There is snorkeling in coral reefs, swimming with dolphins, or you can just relax and float on the river.

Sometimes theme parks like the ones we have mentioned can get old, so head to Gatorland where alligators and crocodiles of all sizes and ages can be found. While this park will not featured the typical computer driven fancy graphics we see at other locations, it is still good old-fashioned fun! This destination is also highly educational because kids learn about the everglades and they can check out other animals in the petting zoo.

We all have that one family member who enjoys things that the rest of us may not enjoy quite so much. Take them to the Ripley's Believe it or Not! Odditorium and they are bound to be thrilled for hours. Just one exhibit is where Van Gogh took all of his paintings on postcard size paper and made a mural of it that spans twenty feet wide and is twenty six feet tall.

If it is preferred to have a more educational experience while on vacation, then a trip to the Orlando Science Center is in order. This is great for both the children and the grownups that can learn right alongside the younger ones. Not only are there many different interactive displays, but there is also an IMAX theater as well as a planetarium.

A Florida vacation does not necessarily mean a trip to Disney World because there are many other attractions to keep everyone entertained. With the warm weather, Orlando is a favorite during every season, even in the cold winter months. Why bother staying at home bundled up when it is just a short plane ride to the many different activities for the entire family.
