The Right Type Of Fishing Lights To Use

By Casandra Newton

Fishermen make use of fishing lights to attract shrimps, insects, fish and other members of this food chain to a specific area where they are harvested. The light attractor is attached to a structure on the boat such that it is either below the water or slightly above it. The light attracts the fish because of the color.

Small fish are concentrated where there is plenty of food to feed on. Bigger fish look for small fish and insects to feed on. To get fish a fisherman looks for the environment which is conducive for the fish and they are bound to be found in large numbers.

Scientific research has proven that the eyes of fish are very sensitive to green and blue colors. This fact has been attributed to the fact that these animals spend their life in water which tends to be greenish or bluish in color. When the water has small matter which is particulate in nature light in the blue region of the spectrum is scattered. Water with plants and nutrients scatters green color. This is because photosynthetic microorganism and plants absorbs the red color in the spectrum and what is left is mostly green.

Many individuals might have knowledge that fish are usually attracted by light but what they might not know is the right color to use in this. Visual receptors of fish and other members of this food chain are attracted to blue or green light according to biological research. This is why it is recommended that attractors are made out of these two colors.

However any other light can also be used if it is very intense. White light can also be used as an attractor because a portion of its energy is in the blue and green region. The light should also have a high intensity to be visible for a long distance. It should also be submersible and portable.

There are two types of fishing lights. There are those that are portable and those that are permanent. Those are portable use power from batteries. This translates to light of low intensity and it also shines for a short time. The most common portable light is a 12 volt incandescent headlight but a fluorescent lamp is more efficient.

Permanent attractors require 115 volts to light up and they are usually fixed on poles at the pier. It is advisable to use permanent attractors for many days in a row. This is important to attract big fish which take a considerable amount of time before realizing where smaller fish which are attracted to the light are concentrated. After getting used to a schedule the fish will keep coming regularly to the same area where the light is fixed.

Most of the light from attractors gets reflected back in the air by the water surface. To reduce this aluminum reflectors are used to direct the light back into the water. You can also use submersible fishing lights which shine twice as much under the water surface. You should be careful to avoid a shock.
