Basic Things Regarding MK 262 Mod 1 Ammo

By Rebekah Alford

Prior to the use of military equipment for civilians, a period of twenty to thirty years can pass and MK 262 Mod 1 ammo can be a good example. The original pieces were designed for the military and the main platform for use was M16. There are no major differences between the original military products and the ones meant for civilian use, as they can be found in boxes and they have a good accuracy and performance. Used by NATO, a reliable battle pack could not exist without the projectiles.

Over time, the M16 platform has been modified and was made with 18 inch barrels. Both, the name and the configuration of the rifle were modified. Mod 0 was introduced in 2002, but only with one cannelure and it was transformed into Mod 1 in 2003. The temperature sensitivity became better in 2005. Using OTM (open-tipped match) as type of projectile, the expanding process is made differently than normal. In many cases the hollow cavity is meant for expansion, but for the current model, the accuracy is improved due to the stabilization of the projectile in flight.

When the projectile reaches soft tissues, the heavy base can make it tumble, or yaw. The hollow cone and the cannelure fragments are meant to break off. A rapid energy transfer occurs because of the fragmentation and severe wounding could occur. The first projectiles that were sold were actually cosmetic blemishes and the selling was made in bulk.

People could not be able to notice the scratches and other imperfections with the naked eye. But, variations may have occurred in accuracy, wind drift, or terminal performance, when long range was involved. If conditions would be ideal, a bullet should be able of penetrating fifteen to twenty inches into soft tissue.

The effect of fragmentation can be given by velocity and barrel strength. In specific cases, projectiles are unable to incapacitate a person, as the probability of fragmentation is not high. Meant for Special Purpose Rifle, also called SPR, MK 262 is manufactured by Black Hills Ammunition. The 77 grain Sierra Match-King is a characteristic of the bullet. The effectiveness of the ordinary M855 was low at long range.

Different sources can confirm that the bullet can kill a person from a distance of seven hundred meters. Severe injury in soft tissues was seen first at a three hundred meters distance, as ballistic tests can confirm. Many Special Force operators have a preference for the projectile, as it is very accurate, has range power and stopping power and causes severe wounds.

With a barrel of twenty inches, the muzzle velocity can be of 2750. The projectiles can be found in boxes that each has fifty rounds. One dollar is the normal prince for every round, but the products are not easy to find.

Used for sniper rifles, MK 262 Mod 1 can be a very good solution for M16 platforms. Compared to the regular M855, the bullet is much better, especially when long ranges are involved. The primary benefits of acquiring the rare rounds could be wounding capacity, performance, accuracy, range power and stopping power.
