Technological Advancements On Modes Of Transport

By Byron Jonas

Apart from enabling the movement of people and goods from place to place, the transport industry has other benefits which are critical in improving the economy. The government earns revenue from taxes levied directly or indirectly on different modes of transport.

Road transit, rail transit and pipeline use land as a medium of conveyance. Road transit is the most common and developed means of transit and is applicable in the whole world. The massive use of this system of movement is encouraged by the relative cheapness of developing its necessary infrastructure. Its use has grown immensely due to the advancements in the auto mobile industry technology.

Different modes have their own advantages and limitations. Road transportation is cost effective because of the affordability of obtaining vehicles. One can easily own a private car than a private jet. Fast deliveries are also made by automobiles especially over short distances and this is attributed to the improvements in speeds. This method is also flexible for trucks can move anywhere provided there is a road.

Road carriage is however subject to traffic delays especially in congested cities. There is a great deal of pollution to the environment in terms of carbon fuels emitted from combustion. Bad weather totally affects especially foods and storms affects driving.

The fastest of all these is the air travel carriage. It is among the safest means of travelling and enables fast long distance deliveries. The customer perceptions of flights are high and this is coupled with improved service deliveries. Limitations of airplanes include the level of risk involved. Although accidents are very rare to occur, but when they do occur, the calamities are unbearable. It is also expensive and not easily affordable to most people whereas there is always a likelihood of flight delays or cancellations.

Benefits of rail transportation include fast delivery as a result of high speeds and no congestion in the rail network. Trains carry a high capacity of passengers or goods hence effective in reducing congestion in urban cities. In comparison with other modes of transit, trains are more environmental friendly and cost effective. Limitations of this mode are the inflexibility of the railway line, limited routes and timetables. There is a huge reliance to the freight timetable and it is also susceptible to unforeseen delays.

All the models of transport play an important role in the movement of people and goods across the globe. Technological advances are improving the service delivery in the industry by improving on the safety factor and speed of movement.
