This All American City Has One of the Top 35 Beaches in the country

By Jony Mozen

There are 1,800 miles of coastline in Florida and the two miles that caress Delray Beach just happen to be on one of the best family beaches in the whole state! This charming oceanfront beach town features award winning, sparkling, manicured sandy beaches that attract approximately one million visitors a year to its public beach. Travel Holiday magazine voted it as one of the top public beaches in the southeastern United States for swimming and one of the top 35 beaches in the entire country overall. Sand quality, safe waves, and water warmed by Gulf Stream currents were cited as factors contributing to their choice of Delray Municipal Beach.

The nonprofit Clean Beaches Council, which runs the most comprehensive, national environmental and public safety beach certification program in the country, has officially certified the beaches in Delray to be clean and environmentally well managed. The prestigious Blue Wave Beach certification is attributed to Delray Beach's dedication to maintaining a clean and healthy beach environment by contracting a beach cleaning service and cabana-rental company to ensure year-round enjoyment for residents and visitors. Its award winning, manicured sandy beaches attract approximately one million visitors a year to one of the top two best family beaches in the state. The City of Delray Beach also received recognition from the "American Coastal Coalition" for Delray's pristine white sandy beaches. If you have kids or grandchildren who love the beach, Delray has been rated the best beach for building great sandcastles. Its Blue Wave beach stamp of approval also officially certifies it as a clean and healthy beach for swimming, snorkeling, sail boarding, diving, kite surfing, kayaking, windsurfing and other water sports. Delray Beach is also a favorite with divers who come here to explore the underwater remnants of the Inchulva, wrecked just off the coast in 1903.

Delray Beach is one of the cleanest cities in South Florida and public safety is a #1 priority in this safety-conscious beachfront community. Located between Boca Raton and Boynton Beach, even with its population of 65,000, this Village by the Sea, as it is sometimes called, earned its friendly and welcoming reputation for having the intimacy and community feeling of a small town. Delray Beach offers the whole family a chance to spend a relaxing and peaceful day at the beach, where you'll find wonderful restaurants right across the street. And it's just a short walk to the Intracoastal, where a downtown playground area in Veterans Park is convenient for mom and dad and fun for the little ones. This South Palm Beach County city is also known for its art galleries, shops, boutiques and fine restaurants, as well as its famous Delray Beach Tennis Center, the historic Colony Hotel and the annual Delray Beach Garlic Festival and the noted Delray Affair art festival. At night, Atlantic Avenue becomes an active nightspot with dance clubs, bars and restaurants for adults and singles.

Overseeing public safety at the municipal beach and Atlantic Dunes Park, the Ocean Rescue team has received numerous awards for their professional achievement from the USLA, Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association and Emergency Medicine Foundation, which is important when the largest crowd hits the beach on the Fourth of July. People come from miles around to spend the day viewing the sand-sculpting contest, the Beautiful Baby bathing suit contest, the Patriotic Bicycle & Scooter Parade, the 30x60-foot American flag raising, and dancing on the beach. At 9:00pm a live radio broadcast provides a synchronized music background for the famous Grucci fireworks display and its exciting grand finale tribute to our country's birthday. Don't miss it!

If you'd rather avoid the main beach, you can slip off to the southern end of the beach to a quiet beach/park nestled in an elevated wooded area called Atlantic Dunes Park. There is a boardwalk and nature trail in addition to metered parking, a pavilion, public restrooms and picnic tables. Anchor Park is a public city park, across A1A from the beach that has picnic tables, barbecue grills, playground, public restrooms, outside showers, and metered parking with easy access to the beach. This pocket park is open 8:00 am till dusk, and it's a nice, quiet spot for a picnic but be sure to pack everything you need because there are no concession stands. Nearby Sandoway Park, on the same side of the street, has metered parking, restrooms, drinking fountain, and vending machines.

Visit Delray Beach now and discover how our Old Florida charm and character blend into the modern, upscale style of West Delray, which is home to some of the most beautiful, master-planned communities for families and retirees. Yes, climate, dining and shopping, cultural attractions, educational and business opportunities, and the beautiful beaches help make Delray Beach home to a wonderful lifestyle. Make it your home, too.
