How to Pair Cigars with Beverages

People have been enjoying the pastime of smoking cigars with their favorite beverages for centuries. If you are asking "What should I drink while cigar smoking?", you will find that there really isn't a cut-and-dried answer to this question. The drinks that you choose to enjoy with your cigars will depend entirely on personal preference. That being said, there are certain guidelines that may help you to find pairings that you will enjoy.

Let's consider "purpose". One of the reasons that people smoke a cigar is to enjoy the different flavors offered by the tobacco and the wrapper. Cigar smokers who enjoy rating cigars have found that many drinks will actually alter the way the cigar tastes.

Keep in mind that the above rule is just a generalization and will help novice cigar smokers get started. However, it is important to experiment since everyone has different taste preferences. Limiting yourself with not allow you to make new discoveries about which smokes and beverages you like the best together. If you are new to cigar smoking, however, it might be a good idea to start your cigar-beverage pairings using the general rule of matching cigar-beverage weights with one another. You can then begin to explore once you have a better idea of which pairings tend to agree with your palate the most.

Some cigars pair better with different types of drinks, as well. If you have a rich smoke, you might find that a cup of coffee or espresso is the best drink. However, if you have a lighter smoke, a blond or India pale ale might be the best option. Some smokers also prefer to drink cognac or a high quality single malt whiskey with their cigars, as well. As a note, alcoholic beverages are really only consumed when you're relaxing. The reason for this is that even the alcohol flavor can change the way the smoke tastes, altering your experience considerably.

So, let's review. First, make sure that you aren't smoking your cigar too fast, or ashing it too frequently. Then, try drinking water only while you're smoking for a while. Finally, have some patience. After you've followed these three simple rules for a while, you will probably find yourself enjoying a fine cigar more completely than ever before.
