Family Road Trips - 5 Things to Remember

By Yolanda Reyes

If you're planning for a family vacation or weekend getaway, take the time to plan for your road trip. Sure, you can use websites as your map to your destination, but often times the basics on how to enjoy a road trip is overlooked.

Don't forget the music/DVDs

Who would have thought that aside making time pass, music also helped you realize that you could also be on American Idol. Good classical CD or music from a popular kid's show can help keep your children occupied. It wouldn't if you bring movies along, especially if there's a DVD player in your vehicle. Besides helping pass the time, music can also keep your kids occupied as well inspire the family for a sing-a-long.

Don't forget the snacks

Snacks are important in road trips. This suggestion is simple enough, yet people still forget because usually everyone is rushing to the door. Bring the plastic utensils if you bring snacks like yogurt or fruit cups. Other things you should remember to bring are napkins, paper towels, and cleaning wipes. Kids plus food plus a moving vehicle equals mess.

Don't forget the entertainment for your kids

Other things that can keep your kids occupied are toys, books, and games. Games like "I spy with my eye" can also help pass the time and even get your family involved. As long as your kids are occupied, traveling doesn't have to be stressful or distracting.

Remember to bring emergency supplies

Bring sun screen, blankets, first aid kits, etc. on your trip, depending of course, where your road trip is taking you. You'll be more at ease knowing you have basic supplies with you, just in case of emergencies or really bad traffic.

Remember to check your vehicle

Before you hit the road, get your vehicle tuned up first. Get an oil change and make sure your fluids are up the proper level. That way, you won't get car trouble when you're in unfamiliar territory.

With these simple suggestions, your family road trip wouldn't be stressful so that when you arrive at your destination, you'll still be in a good mood with plenty of energy to spare.
