If you know that you are going to have a long layover in a city, check what there's to do beforehand. A 3 hour layover in Washington D.C. can easily turn into a quick tour of the Washington Mall or a long sit in Minneapolis can become a quick shopping trip to your Mall of America! As an important safety measure before leaving on a trip one should always tell a close friend or family member when they plan on returning and any other key information about the trip. By doing this one is guaranteeing that someone will know something is wrong when nobody shows up on your expected date.

If it is, inquire as to whether the issuer charges additional fees for purchases made outside of the US.When traveling, always keep a few snacks in your bag. Airline food can be expensive. Having to stop for snacks when you're in the car can take time. A few small granola bars or crackers won't take up much space and can save you both time and money.

Make your baggage easy to identify. Many suitcases and bags look vastly similar, so if you are buying new baggage, choose one with a distinctive pattern or print. If you prefer a suitcase of a more normal shade or do not wish to buy a new one, make your bag stand out with a strip of brightly colored tape placed in a visible location.Try using the roll technique for packing clothes into your bags for your trips. This generally saves more space and time than with traditionally folding the clothes. You can even fit more clothes in your bag this way. By rolling the clothes up in tissue paper, you can also prevent them from getting too many wrinkles.

Write down your travel plans and leave a copy with friends or family. It is always clever to arrange for the unexpected. Should you go go missing, someone is sure to notice much sooner this way. Knowing what your plans were will also be greatly helpful to your authorities. When dining out during your travels, take the opportunity to choose one meal totally at random. You may wind up having the right meal of your trip and you're sure to have a little fun in the process. If you're worried about this technique, try it on a day that you'll be visiting multiple restaurants, so that you can fill up somewhere else if you don't like your dish.

Carry a business card or book of matches from your hotel with you everywhere you go. When you are out on the streets of a foreign city and end up lost, this small item will be greatly useful when trying to get directions from a taxi driver or a local on the street.
