Different Roles Of Horses In Society - The Many Situations Horses Can Be Found In

By Byron Jonas

Horses were domesticated in central Asia before 3500 BC. The wild ponies of today are supposedly a collection of domesticated horses that became feral. Humans have discovered plenty of different roles of horses in society. These roles vary between country and among various cultures too.

Companion - These animals are considered to be a welcome addition to many homes. They make a wonderful traveling companion for someone who enjoys trail riding. Some people like to have them as pets, even if they don't ever saddle up and go for a ride. There's something about a horse that is calming to many people.

Security - Most people have heard of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which no longer utilizes the services of these animals. Even though this group of officers has switched to using vehicles, a number of large cities still provide a few of their officers with these animals for patrolling purposes. Mounted police officers are able to maneuver through a crowded city relatively easily. They also sit high above the crowd, making it easier to see when trouble is brewing within a large group of people.

Guide - People who are blind and suffer from dog allergies are able to use a guide pony instead. Using a horse as an alternative to a necessity for many of the blind also covers individuals who are scared of dogs. In 1999, The Guide Horse Program was set into motion. This organization provides seeing-eye ponies for people who need them, free of cost.

Worker - Ranchers, farmers, and the Amish community are the main groups of people who still utilize these animals for work purposes. These animals are used to herd cattle and sheep, pull hay wagons, plow fields, run machinery, and help the family run errands around town.

Security - The mounted police can maneuver more efficiently around a crowded area than a patrol car. Also, an officer riding atop a horse is able to see over the heads of everyone in the crowd, which makes it easier to spot trouble before it gets out of hand. Officers can occasionally be seen riding on horseback in parts of London, Sao Paulo, Oslo and New York, as well as along the border between US and Mexico. One of the most well-known police forces was the RCMP, or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which have since switched to vehicles.

Horses used to be rode into war, used for transportation, and was in place well before the automobile. Once alternative means of transportation were created, many people resorted to these instead, choosing to shell out money for gasoline instead of grain and hay. The different roles of horses in society have greatly changed, but these large animals are still a huge part of many cultures.
