Wine, Nature and Wildlife in the Yarra Valley

By Nia Lawrence

If you love wine and nature, head to Victoria's Yarra Valley. It has mountains, rivers and wildlife. With the cool temperature, this area is widely known for producing high-quality sparkling wines, pinot noir, and chardonnay. Go on a winetasting spree, or taste the cuisine of the top restaurants in the region. Nestled in a nature-rich environment, there are many different mountains, forests and wild creatures you will be able to see in this valley. The following are some spots you can visit while you are in this wine and nature travel destination.

If you are in the vicinity of Healesville, take a breather from winetasting in the TarraWarra Museum. Housing many artworks from the second half of the twentieth century to the present, it is a good place to experience and understand Australian art. The architecture of the museum is an art piece in itself. Designed by one of the top 5 architects of Melbourne, Allan Powell, the building mimics the graceful colors and shapes of the Yarra Valley. Your Healesville accommodation or hotel can point you in the right direction on how to get here.

The Yarra Valley has many outdoor sites you can visit. You can head to any one of the three National Parks and forests of this region. For a rainforest experience, visit the Yarra Ranges National Park. As an important water catchment, it hosts a rainforest at the slopes of Mount Donna Buang. Walk through the rainforest gallery and experience the sounds of the birds. Likewise, you can also head to the summit of the mountain to have a view of the area on their 21-meter lookout tower. This is especially breath-taking during winter. You can also ski or ride a toboggan during winters at the Lake Mountain. The area has many wonderful spots for camping and picnicking. Just be mindful of bushfires when traveling or driving through forests. Likewise, for safety, follow the rules and guidelines of the parks and forests.

For another close encounter with nature, travel to the Healesville Sanctuary. Widely known as one of the best places to watch Australia's endemic species of animals in the wild, it is also a place where wildlife conservation is put into action. See koalas, dingoes, platypus, kangaroos, and more where they live and eat. Ask more information from your Healesville accommodation.

Wine, wildlife and more: experience all these things in the Yarra Valley.
