Nature Adventures in Mexico - Rio Secreto

By Robert Nickel

For many years the government of Mexico did not appreciate the impact their people were having on the environment. Now that has changed. Widespread conservation projects and awareness campaigns are being implemented in an effort to preserve the incredible and rare ecosystems in Mexico's land and waters. One such example of conservation being tied in with the country's most important source of revenue, tourism, is the creation of several nature reserves and adventure parks. One such place is Rio Secreto Nature Reserve and Ecotour Center.

Located near Quintana Roo on the Riviera Maya, Rio Secreto specializes in acquainting the traveler with the special natural wonders of Mexico. The large system of cenotes provides unending interest, as the ceilings and walls of these ancient caverns is encrusted with centuries old stalactites and stalagmites. Crystal clear pools in the cenote provide the perfect opportunity to gently float along and take in the sparkling wonder above.

Other cave adventures Rio Secreto provides are Gypsum and Conglomerate caves. The first is a very uncommon variety, and created by gypsum dissolving easily in the ocean waters. The fast rate of dissipation means Gypsum caves are always very long and narrow, but still easily explored with a guide. Conglomerate caves are formed by sediment after a volcanic eruption. The leftover minerals mix with the plentiful limestone of the area, creating a huge cavern. While Gypsum caves are rare, the Conglomerate type are even more so. In fact, only three have been discovered in the entire world - and two are in Mexico!

Rio Secreto takes conservation very seriously, thus if a cenote or cave begins to show even the slightest signs of impact from tours, it is removed from the itinerary. The staff appreciates the importance of educating visitors on the delicate existence of natural elements in Mexico, and indeed the rest of the world, but not to the detriment of them. So, if you are booking a tour with Rio Secreto and find particular cenotes are not available it is simply for their protection.

Mexico is the perfect place for caves to exist. There are times of the year where heavy and frequent rain have combined with the huge quantity of limestone in the area, and eventually collapsed inward creating a cavern. Since limestone is more water soluble than other rocks, it is more likely to fall in over hundreds of years. The result is a place like no other! Visit the Riviera Maya and see the incredible caves with your own eyes!
