If you are a fan of Jamaican music, you'd have to be living on the dark side of the moon to have not heard of Bob Marley. Bob Marley is definitely the alpha and omega of reggae for most fans. His greatest hits album, Legend - The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers, has sold a staggering 25 million albums worldwide making it one of the biggest selling albums of all time.
The one thing that is missing from that album is a video representation of Bob doing his classic songs. That is resolved on the DVD version of this album. This amazing DVD contains 22 videos of his best songs and an award-winning documentary, Time Will Tell.
Time Will Tell clocks in at 90 minutes and is a high level overview of the life and times of the enigmatic, Bob Marley. The makers of the film assume a lot of knowledge of Bob Marley's life and the Rastafarian religion, so new initiates may be at a bit of a loss sometimes. This shouldn't deter you as with a little research one can fill in the gaps. Some may find Marley's almost indecipherable dialog a bit over the top, when you can actually make out what he is saying. He has some great things to say, but some of his logic is a bit circular. Bob is spot on when he talks about human rights and politics in Jamaica. Sometimes he deviates into rambling histrionics. When you hear "Jah! Rastatari" for the hundredth time, it starts to lose all meaning. It's not really Bobs fault, but it all seems a bit "cultist" at times. On the plus side, this film isn't filled with a bunch of "talking heads" giving their opinions about Bob, his music and beliefs. The story comes from the mouth of Bob himself.
Now back to the music, which will get many more rotations than the documentary. The songs included are: Want More, Is This Love, Jamming, Could You Be Loved, No Woman No Cry, Stir It Up, Get Up Stand Up, Satisfy My Soul, I Shot the Sheriff, Buffalo Soldier, Exodus, Redemption Song, One Love/People Get Ready. The are also extra songs accessible through the play list menu: Concrete Jungle, Forever Loving Jah, I Shot the Sheriff, Them Belly Full, War, Revolution, Zimbabwe, Redemption Song, Natural Mystic, Get Up Stand Up.
One of the best features of the music video portion of this DVD, is that you can program the songs in any order you wish to make you own video play list. The sound and the video quality is excellent, and if given the proper volume, the base will rattle your windows.
The price for this DVD is probably its best feature. It costs about as much as the audio only Legend CD, but contains all the songs and more. If you are a Marley fan, you are seriously missing out by not having this in your collection. So if you feel like taking a trip to the beautiful island of Jamaica, pick up a copy of Legend - The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers.
