Soccer is played in two periods, the duration of the time changes depending on age bracket; but most of the time, it is played in two 45-minute fractions. The most obvious rules to soccer are that the game is played between two teams, consisting of nine players and a goalie. Players are only permitted to play the ball with their feet; each team has their own set of offensive and defensive groups. The main rule of soccer is to obtain a score by kicking the ball into the goal of the opponent's team. The goalie is the only player who is permitted to use the hands or feet.
Soccer players will often practice "juggling", which is a skill that consists of keeping the ball in the air through the use of the feet, knees, thighs, head, or chest, all legal places on the body to control the ball. If the hands or the arm is used, the other team will take control of the ball. If the ball is hit outside the playing field, it will be declared as out of bounds, giving the ball possession to the opposing team, where in turn a "throw-in" will be done and the feet must be kept grounded while the player hurls the ball back in the playing field.
A soccer ball that is kicked out of bounds over the line of their own goal will lead to a "corner kick" wherein the opponent gets hold of the ball to a designated corner and kicks it back into play to their team mates. The defensive players of the opposing team will have a "goal kick" if the soccer ball touches the out of bounds line over the goal line of the other team's goal.
There are numerous instances when a "foul" is called. A few of this actions like intentional pushing, tripping, slide tackling, having contact on the ball with any part of the torso and most likely rude behavior, will be called out. In situations like these, the referee will give the opponent a "free kick" on the actual spot where the foul was committed.
If the game reaches the end of the play time with the score tied, a "shootout" will be given to each team wherein the goalie of the other team block a shot from the player of the other team. A winner will be declared after the first successful goal.
