Necessary Paperwork Needed To Get A Passport

By Whitlow McGregor

The U. S. Government website will give you a list of all the local places you can go to get a passport. Visit these local establishments and they will give you all the necessary papers that you need. Strict rules must be followed but getting these credentials is not the problem some people like to say it is.

Whether you leave the country due to work or pleasure, travel permits are needed. Due to acts of terrorism throughout the world, homeland security requirements are more strict than ever. You may have to ravel without warning. Have these documents ready when and if the need for them arises.

Having the proper paperwork in order will save a myriad of time. Bring your birth certificate as proof of citizenship or other acceptable papers such a being a naturalized citizen. Other acceptable forms are listed on the government website.

Residency can be proven with a driver's license. If you do not have one, again there are other forms of proof listed on the web page. The Department of Motor Vehicles, or the DMV, can provide proof of residency that looks similar to a drivers license. Be sure and bring one of them with you.

Next is having a photograph taken. Most government offices are equipped to do this for a small fee. They can also be done by any photographer who knows how to take passport photos. The pictures must be exactly two inches by two inches in size. It may be cheaper and wiser to have them done where you apply for the papers.

Travels papers cost money but they are good for fifteen years. When you consider the cost in that light, the charge is very reasonable. You will pay about $110.00 to $140.00 for your first passport. The card is an additional $25.00. You can get the process put into high gear and get it within two weeks if you are wiling to pay an extra $60.00 charge. Without it, you will get your documents in four to six weeks.

The people who tell the horror stories about getting these credentials are usually the people who go unprepared. Documentation is missing or papers have been improperly filled out. There is a certain amount of work involved but following the rules to the letter makes the process one that is not unpleasant.
