By Adriana Noton

Online music distribution has been said as among the major reasons in the semi demise of conventional retail stores in this industry, similar to the declining popularity of video game rental stores. It is true, who would not want the comfort of downloading through the internet in such easy manner. Save the time spent to go out and buy a CD and also enjoy the promotional extras exclusively offered to online shoppers.

Basically it means one has to download for a fee from the internet. One can choose the stream or full download options. Stream basically means download only the content on a need basis, while full download means download all content to the buyers computer's hard disk or storage data ready for access anytime it is needed.

Online music distribution continues evolve over the years. It has help grow the businesses of the top distributors in the industry in the same manner that it also created venues for independent artists and small players to access new market channels, save on operating costs, and promote artistic freedom in a more open manner from before.

The internet is truly an amazing venue for music exposure. It paved way for artists and producers to stir up public interest in a very fast pace manner never seen before. One has witnessed how the careers of several accidental artists were launched successfully in such a simple and informal manner of uploading their demos via one or two of the popular public social network sites. In matter of days, they became worldwide sensations and has been proven successful overtime.

Initially, the simplest way was to launch a website. Artists then manufacture their own CDs, launch and then sell these into their websites. However, this is easier said than done. It involves much more work and effort to make it work.

Another option for an artist is to negotiate licensing deals with one or two of the major download retailers. If this works, it is not impossible to reach a thousand downloads in short period of time, as these retailers probably already have thousands if not millions of followers. There is also the lucrative option to explore licensing and royalty agreement with internet radio.

Innovative models for distribution continue to emerge. Akin to venture capitalists, some internet based companies set up sponsored websites as venues for independent artists to launch partial tracks of their album to test its marketability prior to full launch. They provide budget for marketing and links to online stores, free of charge for a certain period of time. If the track sells, production of the album is fully sponsored and a distribution license is made. If tracks flop, the artist can walk away free.

The latest of online music distribution mode is called podcasting. Some companies provide website venues for artist to launch their music free of licensing for marketing exposure via the internet. Thousands of podcasters are on the lookout for free music to be used in their programs. In short, a loop is created between the service provider, the artist, and the podcasters creating internet traffic that serves all their interests.
