Overseas Travel - Which Country Should You Go To?

By Mark Walters

Tourism is the major economy of many countries today. This was considered in 2010 to be an estimated $919billion. Even though there is an economic downturn worldwide, the urge to travel and see other countries remains constant.

France tops the United Nations' World Tourism Organisation's league of nations with most international tourist arrivals (welcoming 76.8million visitors in 2010) keen to see such attractions as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the millionaire's playgrounds of St Tropez and Nice, and spending $46.3billion along the way.

The second favorite of top earning tourist destinations is the United States. With exciting places to visit such as the Florida theme parks, and the diverse cities of New York, San Francisco, Chicago and spending time gambling in Las Vegas. This is a choice for a holiday destination for many people.

China today is very much on the top of the ladder as a leading economy trendsetter. By opening its doors to encourage tourism to its shores, and. with its majestical sites of the Forbidden City, the terracotta soldiers and a walk along the Great Wall of China for energetic enthusiasts, it has become a most interesting country to visit.

High on the list of worthwhile holiday delights is Spain. There are many package tours available for visiting and the sunshine is a big lure. Barcelona, Madrid with its Prada Museum and wide avenues, Seville for silver, and the Costa del Sol for sunshine and beaches, simply fly into Malaga and holiday in Torremolinos for a most reasonable time away from home.

Italy comes in fifth place with visitor numbers exceeding 43 million and spending figures reaching close to $40 billion. Italy is one of the three European countries that is hoping to increase the number of visitors from emerging economies through the European Passion project. Visitors to Italy come for its ancient history and delightful food among other things.

The United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, Malaysia and Mexico make up the rest of the UN's World Tourism Organisation's league table of international tourist arrivals.

In Africa, the favourite country for visitors is Morocco. Tourists are intrigued by the sight of Casablanca and dining with various Moroccan delicacies being an added attraction. In the Middle East, the Red Sea, Egypt with its pyramids and fascinating history are all a lure.
