A Look Into The Rich And Interesting History Of Peterborough

History is responsible of what will become of the future. The same can be said with the history of Peterborough, a cathedral city that is located in the Eastern part of England. Wouldn't it be nice to know more about the history of a beautiful city before it became as what we know today? The past can be a helpful tool for use to appreciate things even more.

According to the history of Peterborough uk, the city first became a Saxons settlement. The original name of Peterborough was Medehamstede, a name for the village built by the Saxons, which means meadow homestead. An abbey has been built close to it in 655, but was later abandoned on 870 because of the plundering of the Danes. Later on, a new abbey was built in the city, and a wall surrounding the city was made to protect the people for other attacks from the Danes. Having a fortified settlement, the place then was called St. Peters burgh. A market was later built, along with the growing and development of the place into a small town. And yet, the Danes and Saxons attempted to overrule William the Conqueror and caused the burning of Peterborough in 1070.

Peterborough became a small and so far, an insignificant city that was commanded by the abbots during the Middle Ages. The city experienced yet again another fire, but managed to recover again and prosper even more. Developments in the city became evident such as the wool industry, annual fairs and a

The abbey of Peterborough was closed down in 1539, following the orders of Henry VII of closing all the abbeys in England. And then, the abbey turned into a cathedral on 1541. Peterborough then became an official little city, with an increasing population of 1500 people. By the 17th century, the population increased even more to 2000 people. Peterborough, along with other cities in the past, endured the attacks of the plague which caused the death among its population.

The coming of the 18th century marked the development of the population and establishments in Peterborough. The town thrived due to the increasing demands of the town's goods during the Napoleonic wars. The first theatre was built, alongside with the building of the Custom House and the creation of the Improvement Commissioners by the Parliament.

The 19th century became a very important part in the history of Peterborough because of more developments of the city. The population grew even more, and more and more establishments were built. From then on, starting from the 20th century to the present, the city of Peterborough is still continuing to improve and prosper. Electricity was introduced, and thanks to the technological advancements that came, the city became what we know as today. From a simple and menial colony to a flourishing city in England, Peterborough has its fair share of history. The history of Peterborough is a very rich one that other people should gain knowledge of.
