The Citation Encore Jet Offers Great Performance and Safety

By Sandy Rutherforde

When you walk out on to a busy general aviation ramp anywhere in the world these days, chances are good that you will spot a Cessna Citation aircraft. The Cessna Citation originates from a very long distinguished family of aircraft that has not simply grown to be the most widely used business aviation aircraft of its time, but completely revolutionized the industry as we know it today.

In the late 1960s already a highly successful piston-engine aircraft company, Cessna noticed a niche in the business jet marketplace that was missing. With jet engine technology improving at a fast pace, Cessna designers noticed an opportunity to create a light jet that could operate on short airstrips which were customarily only assigned to turbo-prop aircraft. Essentially, it was the best of both worlds. The safety and comfort of a jet aircraft, yet with the short field capabilities of a turbo-prop aircraft. This groundbreaking concept continues to hold true at present for the current generation Citations.

Desert Jet uses the Cessna Citation Encore, which is the most recent and very best achievement of the original Citation family. Easily seating 7 passengers in a center-club configuration with a belted lavatory for an eighth passenger, this plane can fly outstanding distances of as much as 1700 statute miles. For instance, Palm Springs to Chicago can be accomplished with a lot of ease. Not only are you going to be flying far, but you will be soaring with a maximum operating altitude of 45,000 feet. Also, even though the Encore can fly high to take full advantage of the prevailing winds and much better range, it can fly safely above most of the weather down below.

Comfort is the Encore's middle name. Having a big aft baggage compartment outfitted with a ski tube, the Encore can easily take care of all your luggage requirements and a lot more for your weekend trip to Aspen. In cabin comforts consist of XM satellite radio, Bose noise-cancelling headsets, a satellite phone, a refreshment center, and also a fully-enclosed lavatory to name just a few.

In the front, Citation Encore pilots have all the most current technology to get you to your destination safely. At their disposal is Honeywell's Primus 1000 avionics suite that provides both the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) plus the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS II). These systems are an additional pair of eyes in the sky to help pilots stay away from rising terrain and other aircraft traveling close by.

Ironically, the Citation name originates from a past Triple Crown winning thoroughbred stallion. What it lacks in speed, the Citation Encore wins in almost every other category such as overall performance, basic safety, level of comfort, dependability, class and value. Since being initially certified by the Federal Aviation Administration in 1971 as the initial Citation I, the Citation family has improved through the years with much technological development. Nonetheless, one factor has always stayed constant. It has been tested, tried and established as a true performer, proving that the name still fits.
