Nowadays, the church stands tall as the only remaining representative of a community, Mitchelville, that housed former slaves. This church began functioning a few years before the Civil War ended, the brunt of the work done by freed slaves who lived here. The St. James Baptist Church possesses the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating cultural institution in historic Mitchelville, based on reports.
