Safety Tips For Your Holiday Getaway

By Harry Barber

Traveling to different countries and experiencing new cultures and traditions is an unforgettable experience. Visiting foreign countries gives you the opportunity to see the beauty of a new country and visit the sights the country is famous for. When travelling abroad, however, safety should be your first priority.

Helping you prepare for any eventuality is planning ahead and you also need to be certain that you have an enjoyable and safe holiday. First, you need to consider your transport arrangements. Pickpockets are often found in train and bus stations as well as airports and those who are looking for the right platform or not concentrating on their belongings are the easy targets.

Important documents like tickets and passports should be kept in a belt back or pouch around your neck. Keep money out of sight and safely secured as well. Lock and mark clearly your luggage and also make sure it's good quality. Don't leave your luggage out of sight and keep it with you at all times.

Check with a security, police officer, or at information which taxis are safe to use when you arrive at your destination. Sharing your taxi with a stranger is a big mistake and also avoid using public transportation late at night. Another thing you should avoid altogether is hitchhiking.

When you check into your hotel, make a note of where the emergency exits are, and read the evacuation instructions. Make sure you lock the door to your room properly, and do not let strangers into your room. You should not invite people you have just met into your room either - no matter how friendly they seem.

Items you should bring for your holiday should help you blend with the locals. Standing out and being more like a tourist may cause you to be an easy target. Your expensive jewelry should be left at home and your gadgets such as mobile phones and cameras should be attached to your body or out of sight.

Try to use your credit card most of the time when you travel locally. Avoid using cash as it makes you a target for pickpockets and thieves. Some cash may be required for taxi fares and tips but using travelers' checks and credit cards would be better if you travel internationally. There's credit card fraud happening all around the world so when you're using your credit card, you need to see the card being swiped. You will enjoy and have a safe holiday if you stay alert and are aware that there are criminals targeting tourists.
