What To Watch For With a Rewards Credit Card

By James Roberts

One of the quickest ways to actually borrow cash for just about any kind of purchase is to use a credit card. Most regular credit cards are really just tools which allow someone access to an unsecured loan. When you use a credit card from your wallet you taking out a loan on money that you do not readily have available. Debit cards force you to have the money in your checking account, but credit cards allow you to take out a loan in advance.

Some cards give you points or rewards for buying certain products and you can then spend those rewards to receive additional services. If you can buy something with cash then you can usually also get it for free by spending credit card points. There are points programs for travel, home improvement, electronics, theme parks and of course travel miles. But you should be careful when choosing a new credit card because not all cards are the same. There are hundreds of different types of credit cards, but "rewards" cards are among the most popular.

Some rewards cards have a restricted selection of products you can spend their points for, but some offer thousands of different products and services. You will want to pick a card that has a program that you will use. If you don't travel, then using a credit card that gives airline miles is pretty useless to you.

Not all rewards cards offer the same rewards ratios and redemption plans. Some points programs will only credit you points for certain types of purchases but some are less restrictive and will give you points for any kind purchase. You may also want to be aware of big annual charges just for having the card.

A lot of people purposely use reward point credit cards when they have a big or expensive purchase planned. Rewards cards are often the best home improvement credit cards because you can easily accumulate a lot of points in a short period of time. When used properly reward program credit cards can give you lots of benefits and can actually make a large purchase or series of purchases much less painful in the wallet.
