Menorca Hotels Make A Great Base For Exploring The Balearics

By Claire Collins

The Balearic Islands offer so much that it's not surprising that people book into Menorca hotels year after year, happy to be back. The Balearics are made up of a group of four large islands, Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentara, as well as a cluster of smaller ones, each with its own intrinsic beauty and culture.

There is plenty to see and do in the Balearics. Whether you want to chill out on the beach or explore ancient ruins, there is plenty of opportunities for both. With great restaurants and nightlife too, you'll never be bored.

The largest of all the Balearics is Mallorca, also known as Majorca. Originally a haven for artists and literary enthusiasts, it has seen tough times during the Spanish Civil War, only to emerge as a top destination for travellers who love the great outdoors, and those wanting to the sights and sound of Palma. The reason so many continue to book hotels in Mallorca every year is to enjoy the wonderland of mountains, hiking trails, beaches and bays which make this beautiful island so incredible popular.

Menorca is the least well known island and because of that, it is the greenest and the least developed. The island is small, only 32 miles long and 9 miles wide and has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The island is very windy which attracts the kite and wind surfers here and explains why there is so many windmills. The island is famous for the pipe organ, housed in the Church of Santa Maria. The harbour here is one of the largest natural harbours in Europe and very scenic.

We all might think of Ibiza as the place to go for world-class clubbing, and fair enough too: it has some of the best club events in the world, and top DJs are flown in to keep the reputation intact. But Ibiza is also a very natural, pretty island, with stunning coves, hiking tracks, and plenty of culture. Book into Alcudia hotels, and explore the Old Town - is one of Europe's best medieval towns. You'll be surprised how far away from the clubs you'll feel.
