Going Scuba Diving In Bali

By Alex Heston

There is adventure, and then there is adventure. If you have saltwater coursing through your veins and love to uncover the mysteries of the ocean deep, then the journey for you is a trip to Indonesia for scuba diving in Bali. With its warm waters, coral reefs, and exotic marine life, Bali offers something for everybody, regardless of diving experience. With this in mind, let's take a look what can be beheld under the waters of Indonesia.

Let's delve into a little background on Indonesia, and by extension Bali. Indonesia is an island nation that can lay claim to the world's fourth largest population. There are over 235 million citizens of the country. Moreover, more than a few islands comprise the country - a lot more. There are over 17,500 Indonesian islands.

Situated between Java to the west and the island of Lombok to the east, sits the isle of Bali. Its population nears three million and of all the Indonesian islands, it is number one when it comes to tourism. This is due in no small part to its unique opportunities for snorkeling and diving.

There is a little fishing village on the north-east coast of the island. It is called Tulamben. In 1942 the US Navy transport ship "The Liberty" was sunk by a Japanese submarine. Almost seventy years later, the wreck is a draw to divers from around the world. During peak season over a hundred divers take the plunge to see its remains. It is easily accessible as it lies only eighty feet from shore and rests in waters only one hundred feet deep.

Of course there is more to view than just the wreckage of the Liberty. The remains are home to plenty of different coral. Additionally, people can see ocean sunfish, also called Mola mola. For the very bold, there is the chance to come into contact with whale sharks. Do not let their name scare you; whale sharks prefer to dine on plankton and not people. So, folks can actually swim right alongside these awesome creatures.

Tulamben is only one good diving area. You might also want to visit Menjangen, Nusa Penida and Amed. There are multiple species of marine life to view including parrot fish, giant sun fish, Moray eels, rays and hawksbill turtles. A big favorite to swimmers is the dolphin.

There is no shortage of information on diving adventures off the coast of Bali. A quick search on the internet can yield a plethora of adventurous opportunities. Then you can plan a visit full of fun and excitement.
