Your Kids Will Love Atlantis Marine World

By Mike Woods

Unlike the ancient lost continent of the same name Atlantis Marine World is easy to find on Long Island. It is also not ancient. Just ten years old it lacks the dusty, yawn-inspiring ambiance that often characterizes places deemed educational.

Visitors of all ages will enjoy creative, engaging exhibits. They will find fun, hands-on activities and adventures. They can get close up with penguins and seals, swim with the fish and dive with the sharks.

There are "Mommy and Me programs for children as young as two years. Hands-on activities are especially designed for curious and active small fry. Kid-friendly guides use stories, music, crafts and live-creature encounters to introduce the little ones to the fascinating life forms in and on the sea.

Older children can participate in a variety of age targeted activities, indoors and out. There are sleepover nights with special guided tours of the exhibits. Participants will help feed the fish before chowing down on pizza before lights out.

Atlantis also offers a variety of camps and outdoor programs. Kids get an opportunity to explore a variety of ecosystems and learn about the inhabitants. The Scientist for a Day program offers kids 9-14 the opportunity to learn to collect and record scientific data using the same methods and tools as those used by real scientists.

But Long Island's Marine World is not just for kids. Adults will be equally intrigued by the many fascinating and informative exhibits. There are also special walking and canoeing tours for adults that focus on particular plants, animals and habitats.

During the summer adults can enjoy a Saturday evening wine and cheese cruise along the Peconic river. Atlantis Marine World is a unique and memorable setting for a wedding with a variety of catering and facilities rental options available. Facilities are also available for other social and corporate events.

The aquarium is also home to a rescue center. It is run by a not-for-profit foundation that is dedicated to rescuing, caring for and eventually releasing various endangered species. Visitors to the aquarium may visit the foundation hospital and view convalescing seals, whales, dolphins, porpoises, and sea turtles.

Just 25 minutes away from the aquarium is the Courtyard by Marriott Long Island MacArthur Airport hotel. This is an ideal place for out-of-town wedding guests. Parents of kids enjoying a sleep-with-the fishes adventure can kick back here.

Guestrooms feature a pleasant, flexible workspace with complimentary WiFi. There are spacious, luxurious bathrooms. Beds are comfy and bedding is plush.

Visitors can work out in the fitness center or relax in the indoor swimming pool. Guests are also offered free passes to World Gym. Limo service is available as well as free shuttle service to the air port and rail road station.
