Advice For Those Taking A Flight With An Infant

By Musa Aykac

Flying with infants can be a real challenge; especially if you intend to travel long haul. With older children you can keep them entertained with colouring books or in-flight movies, but it can be harder to keep infants occupied.

- If you want to be sure of a sky cot and a good seat, then you should make a point of booking far in advance. These little bassinettes are great for infants because it means they can lie down comfortably and mums and dads can relax. Most airlines will have these sky cots but they can be in high demand on the popular flights.

- Make sure that the favourite toys and blanket for your child are with you for the flight. An infant will be comforted by familiarity and this can mean they are relaxed too during the flight.

- Having everything ready for the baby's feeds is essential when flying. It can be a real pain to be searching for everything in your hand luggage in the confined space of the airplane. It is much easier to manage if things are easy to reach.

- Although you can only take a certain amount of liquids onto a plane, breast milk may be an exception. But before you travel, you need to check this out with your airline first. If you are taking formula with you then the cabin crew will give you the hot water as and when you need it.

- Because it can take some time before the fasten seatbelt signs are switched off, you should make sure the baby is fed before you fly.

- Although you could be tempted to give your infant medication to induce sleep, you could be putting the child in danger so avoid this. Only provide medicine to your infant as instructed by your doctor.
